The Well: Cry Me A River
      #10109015 - 04/24/07 10:17 PM

A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except tuesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer" . The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on tuesday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on tuesday, its your day in the well .

Here we are, by popular demand (two people is popular, right?)

I'll seed this by expanding on this mini-bio I just posted in the monthly thread:

Before starting to play poker full time, I worked for Costco for about 8 months (about the best company there is if you're going to work retail). Prior to that I was a washbay supervisor for Budget for about a year. Before that, I was warehouse manager for a mail order company (collectables - comic books, movie posters, trading cards, etc) for too many years. Between the warehouse and Budget I ran my own company for a couple years (collectables). Both my wife and I were self-imployed, we took "day jobs" with the goal of getting a mortgage. Instead the company she worked for went belly up so she started working for herself again. Then I started playing poker and she went back to school.

Other significant jobs: Worked at a 7-11 in college (often graveyard shift - fun, fun, fun!!). Worked for a print shop as a courier in the downtown area. Not on a bike, not in a car, on foot. Due to the impracticality of short-term parking (nowhere to park without getting a ton of tickets) and the size of deliveries (too big to put on a bike). I'd regularly haul a fifty pound duffel bag full of letterhead or press releases six or eight city blocks. Really big orders would go on a dolly, but that [censored] just slowed me down. Damn I miss being in that kind of shape!

My own little business started with conventional collectibles (mostly comic books - I did a lot of comic book conventions and a lot of eBay) but I eventually really got into classic video games and wrote and published several games for obsolete consoles (ie: Atari 2600). I haven't had much to do with this in a couple years however, a few months ago I started working on an Atari 2600 conversion of WinterBells. Hopefully posting this will spur me into reviving that project.

Also, my most significant 2+2 threads:

This is the trip report I posted when I played at the WPT:

My "Ask me about Costco" thread in OOT:

Feel free to ask about any of the above, or even poker.

Please expect this thread to redefine TL;DR

How high have you played?

What is the highest limit you would play if your main source of income was poker?

Where did you goto college and what did you study?

Highest I've played is $400NL.

Obv sustainable!

Unless you count a $10K buy-in WPT event. Or the Stars Sunday Million (no cashes in either).

As high as I was rolled/skilled. I don't think I get what you're asking here (?)

I went to Carleton University here in Ottawa for a BSc in Computer Science. I lasted a year. I'd been burned out of school for a couple years (typical high school overachiever, honour roll, blah, blah, blah). Going to college was really an excuse to move out of my father's house. I had no real business waisting anybody's time there.

I have a friend that has said several times before that he would not play higher than maybe 400nl because he is content with the amount of money he could make at that level (and of course the reduced variance relative to HSNL).

What sites do you play on and what are your usernames at each of them?

I'm pretty sure I know who you are on Stars (and prob FT if you used the almost same name.) Do you care if people know or do you try to keep your name secret?

What's the deal with Lauren Bacall?

Why'd you choose Full Ring?

Oh, okay. It's a bit of a difficult question because I don't know how stressfull/difficult HSNL really would be. It's sort of like kill or be killed situations. Nobody really knows if they're cut out to make/lose $50K on a daily basis until they do it.

I've been self employed on and off for a long time, as has my wife (she's an artist). Poker isn't the only business that's swingy So variance isn't really a new thing to me.

That being said, I've seriously considered staying at $50NL for "a while" and putting off heading back to $100NL and $200NL because I can 12-table $50NL almost effortlessly and with very little in the way of stress or variance.

If you haven't been following my personal soap opera, I usually play a mix of $100NL and $200NL (I was playing 6 tables of each for a couple months) but went through a lengthy bad run and have taken a "vacation" this month at $50NL to regain some sanity.

It's worked very well

I'm not posting my SN's for any and all lurkers to see. IMHO, there's considerable potential advantage from scouting someone's game for tendencies/weaknesses if it's a one way street. At least if you know that someone knows who you are you can level the playing field.

Thanks for taking the time.

Can you describe your set up that you play on. I think I recall you saying you could play your game on a 13' crt if you had to cause you stack the tables. Im impressed by the amount of hands you get in per month.

How many hands do you play per day?
Do you have a goal to hit a certain amount?

How did you come up with the idea of playing poker on the internet?
Did you play in homegames before or was online the first time you played the game?
At what tables did you play at first? (5NL/25NL/...)

Maybe you mentioned it already somewhere, but what bb/100 do you have at 50NL?
(if you don't want to give a close number, thats fine too obv. but I'm always curious what 100/200NL players can have as winrate at lower stakes)
