uNL odds quiz
      #11576582 - 08/08/07 12:02 AM

A quiz about odds. Examine the hands and determine whether Hero has odds to make the call. The first question is an implied odds PF hand. For the other 4, you'll have to put villain(s) on a range, calculate the size of the pot and bets and determine whether you have odds to make the call.

NOTE: These hands are somewhat made up, so no criticism of how Hero got to the point of decision is needed.

Hand 1

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 5 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

SB: $49.50
BB: $52.95
Hero (UTG): $82.80
CO: $44.10
BTN: $100.90

Preflop: Hero is dealt 2 2 (5 Players)
Hero raises to $2.00, CO folds, BTN calls $2.00, SB raises to $8.50, BB calls $8.00, Hero...

Hand 2

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

SB: $49.50
BB: $113.55
UTG: $50.85
MP: $35.45
CO: $50.00
Hero (BTN): $143.70

Reads: Hero decides to rep a set because he knows villain (a reg) is good enough to lay down an overpair and knows I'm not an idiot who thinks 88 is good here.

Preflop: Hero is dealt 4 5 (6 Players)
UTG raises to $1.75, MP folds, CO calls $1.75, Hero calls $1.75, SB folds, BB calls $1.25

Flop: ($7.25) 6 5 3 (4 Players)
BB checks, UTG bets $4.00, CO folds, Hero raises to $15.00, BB folds, UTG raises all-in to $49.10, Hero...

Hand 3

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

Hero (SB): $86.80
BB: $29.75
UTG: $64.55
MP: $32.85
CO: $12.85
BTN: $100.50

Reads: BB earlier in a hand vs me in bvb (blind vs blind). Folds to me, I have AT and I pfr from the SB. He has about 50bb's to start the hand and minraises me. I call. Flop AK4. I check, he overbet pushes 33bb into 14bb pot, I call. He has 99.

Preflop: Hero is dealt J Q (6 Players)
UTG folds, MP calls $0.50, CO calls $0.50, BTN folds, Hero calls $0.25, BB raises to $3.25, MP folds, CO calls $2.75, Hero calls $2.75

Flop: ($10.25) 5 9 6 (3 Players)
Hero checks, BB bets all-in for $26.50, CO calls all-in for $9.60, Hero...

Hand 4

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 5 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

SB: $48.45
Hero (BB): $55.40
UTG: $9.00
CO: $55.95
BTN: $90.75

Preflop: Hero is dealt 5 2 (5 Players)
UTG calls $0.50, 3 folds, Hero checks.

Flop: ($1.25) Q 7 3 (2 Players)
Hero bets $1.00, UTG bets all-in for $8.50, Hero...

Hand 5

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

SB: $49.50
BB: $23.55
UTG: $23.55
MP: $25.45
CO: $50.00
Hero (BTN): $53.70

Reads: We are pretty certain that UTG has a big pair here. BB is unknown.

Preflop: Hero is dealt 6 7 (6 Players)
UTG raises to $2.00, MP folds, CO calls $2.00, Hero calls $2.00, SB folds, BB calls $1.50

Flop: ($8.25) 6 5 4 (4 Players)
BB bets all-in for $21.55, CO folds, UTG calls all-in $21.55, CO folds, Hero...

-----

And so the question for each hand is simple. Should Hero call or fold?

You may choose only one

Hand 4

Hand 5 is hand 5. Hand 4, hand 4, etc. The poll is screwed up for some reason. This used to happen before but it was a bug in the system that was supposed to be fixed. I deleted thread and tried to redo but it still came out inverted, so I will just leave it as is.

1. No, calling here we absolutely have to play fit or fold I don't think that we have the implied odds to call getting 20:6 ish right now.

2. I get that we need ~32% equity here. We're 25% against a set and 46% against an overpair (without a heart, might change it slightly with the BDFD) His range is way more rated to overpairs than to sets given his UTG PFR, therefore I snapcall this.

3. We need around 36.4% equity to call here, I kind of disregard CO because shortstacks are donkeys. Not having pokerstove makes me useless here since this is such a range based question, but we have 55% equity versus TPTK, 38% equity versus a made straight, and 27% equity versus a set. Given this guy's history for going nuts and overshoving with a wide range, I can call here.

4. Lol no. Very little layover, pretty much only our spades are live and maybe not even them. Folderooni.

5. Ugh. Overbet shoving first to act into a 4 way pot on a rag board. This guy has a straight or a set too often here for me to call. This is the only one I didn't do the math on, surprise me and tell me to call.

i said call all of them because that's what I see the donks doing and I can't beat the donks so their way must be right.

Hand 1: you need to be getting almost 18:1 implied odds to call if you think he has a bigger pair. this is clearly not the case

hand 2: you are only getting 1.5 to one to draw to your straight. given read that villain can fold an overpair this is a fold

hand 3: you are getting about 2:1, and are probably a 3:2 dog, so i call

hand 4: easy fold

hand 5: this is an easy call

Great post, so much fun. I am surprised that 3 and 5 is a call, even if we think the other villain is hogging our outs. 1, 2 and 4 are folds. Hopefully somebody with more time on his hands will post some detailed math.

I disagree. People should know how to do this esp. since sites have the handy "total pot amount" somewhere on the table unless you're stupid enough to take that off. If people can't do that and add/multiply/divide they deserve to lose every penny.

Umm, this is uNL. The fundamentals are learned here. Pot odds are one of those fundamentals.
