I don't know whether this is true or not but here's a story that another 2+2er told me:
During the WSOP I'm playing poker at the Gold Coast cause I'm a baller (they spread $1/$2 NL and up to $4/$8 Limit); talking to a guy about interviewing some players that day and another guy asks me..."are you a journalist?"
"Sorta", I say.
He says, "Do you know where I could find Phil Laak?"
I'm like, "you should check out the Poker Expo at the Rio, he's one of the spokesmen for some heads up bar game"
Then he says, "Do you want to hear a story about him?"
I say, "Ok..".
He says, "Phil Laak, that man is a scumbag, if you want to hear the story let me know and we'll go have coffee".
I'm thinking this will be some angle shoot story at the poker table. So we go to get coffee and this guy tells me a crazy story about how Phil was in Thailand and ran into some trouble, and the guy helps him out. Later Phil decides to start a business and this guy hooks him up with some people. The whole deal gets messed up and Phil gets bilked out of some money.
Then the guy says that Phil tried to hire a friend of his to kill him...
I'm thinking this story is pretty nuts.
I'm pretty drunk and agree to go to Expo show the next day and take a pic of this guy and Phil.
So the next day rolls around and I meet up with the guy at the expo show, and sure enough Phil is there signing an autograph and getting his picture taken. I didn't notice her at the time but Tilly is there too. So I go and stand near them and start snapping pics.

This guy sidles up to Phil and says, "Phil I think we need to Talk" (he's the guy on Phil's right).

Phil Grabs Tilly by the arm and basically runs away from this guy and out an employee exit...so I'm thinking...that's pretty strange.
Then the guy asks me to publish the story, and I tell him he should really look into getting a Real investigative journalist to do it.
So, I email the pics to the guy and he says that he's going to start a website about Phil; sure enough he did.
The Whole Phil Story
Pretty crazy if true. Not sure if the guy was trying to extort money from Phil or what...

of course there need to be more sources who verify all of the alledged happenings that supposedly took place ....but uhmmm..wow wtf?
....seems like too crazy a story to be totally made up, however we live on a retarded planet so who knows...NVG worthy no doubt though
edit: by the way, he doesn't really help his case by including the last accusation about both laak and esfandiari. Even if everything he told about thailand was true as a whole it gets a little sketchy if he blatantly accuses phil laak and esfandiari of something totally unrelated and seemingly farfetched as fact.

Of course this is the guy's proof that he sidled up to Phil and said..."we need to talk." And that was Phil's reaction...LOL

Is it me or is this just some guy advertising his business in Thailand?
Does Phil Laak really seem like the type of guy that would hire someone to kill someone over 15k? Seems pretty far-fetched because of that to me. I'd think he would just chalk it up as a loss. Of course I have no knowledge at all of either guy or OP.

it wasn't over 15k, it was over 10k that had already been given, and the tour guide dude's request for more funds to cover taxes.
if this is all true, phil laak sure does overreact.

That's 100% an attempt to adverise his business. Wierd that he chose Phi Laak since he's hardly the most famous poker player but maybe theres a small element of truth in the story.

This was back in the early days of Laak's career before he learned how to lay it down on betting pre-flop, missing flop, and getting check-raised. He used to go 100% with the allin bluff.

First of all, who has a fat wife in Thailand? I can't recall seeing one fat Thai male or female the whole time I was there. Maybe she's a good cook.
And as far as I can tell from the story this guy is nuts.
"On arrival back in Thailand I purchase all the items and the find out that because they are of a religious nature a 10,000$ tax is required. I telephone Phil and he starts screaming and shouting (like the spoilt brat he is) that he is being ripped of I put the phone down and do not here any more."
That's the "Thailand religious artifact exactly $10k USD tax on exporting X number of items".
" My wife on hearing about this nearly had a nervous break down. She was so scared that she went to the Police on her motorbike to file a complaint on the way there she was hit by a car and now has the use of only one leg. Soon after this she developed M.S and although Phil Laak is not directly responsible for this I am sure that all the stress did not help her condition in any way."
Come on.
And so let's see. Phil gave the dude $5k, then opened a business with him and gave him $15k, then felt like he was being ripped off for another $10k (which he probably was), got pissed and ended it. Nothing at all out of line by Phil here.
Now comes the part that is probably a big lie but could possibly be true to some degree.
"1 month goes bye and I get a phone call from an American ex-pat living in Thailand that Phil (Scumbag)Laak has paid 15,000$ to have me and my wife shot and will pay another 15,000$ when he receives the photo’s ."
Right.

I agree about the fat Thai wife. If you're going to move to Thailand then you find yourself some hot girl from the countryside who strips in the Patpong district. Then after you get married you find out it is not a girl!

Black Teddy from Bellagio use to tell me this story at the tables.... He said he had been killin the 30/60 tables in Thiland and stepped out ot smoke little blunt when he saw crazy Laak crash into some disabled kids with his Vespa while carrying his backgammon case....This is where Phil started the habit of wearing his sheatshirt over the top over his head as not to be recognized by the backgammon police.... A few months later, while Teddy was beating some drunk white boys @ the 30/60 game, which he owns, he ws approached by Lakk.. Phil ask him to kill some crazy import/export partner in order to get out of few thousand dollars in business dealings... He was fearfull this person would create a crazy web site and expose him for the child injuring, import/export swindler, backgammon scammer that was depp inside his skin.... Teddy told Mike ( and I quote) " cant you see im killing this 30/60 game??? My wife is hotter than Tigers prize and I dont have time to go killin at this moment... If only you would have cought me a a better time, becaause you know I use to sling dope with the gang bangers and even did some time in the joint for my hommies"...... With that being said, he gave Phil a kiss on the mouth and went back to he 30/60 game..

Absolutely NOT a C-, incorporating everything from this story with Teddy, providing the background for the hooded sweatshirt . . . . my question is why the epic author of ficticious second story only has 66 posts! A+++ for effort and enjoyablitity, yet being extremely concise!

Right.
Well at least i have something in common with Phil he also has a fat wife

Thailand does have restrictions on exporting religious artifacts. 10k could go a long away on removing those in that country.
Google: thailand exporting religious artifacts
Quote:
Note: There are restrictions on the export of items of archaeological interest or historical value without a certificate of authorisation from the Department of Fine Arts in Thailand. The export of images of Buddha and other religious artifacts is also subject to this ruling.

Gunman obviously in on the plot to scam Laak. Took the 15k and then snitched on Phil.
Personally, I think he did it all. He's always struck me as a whiney, mommy's-credit-card kinda guy.

This makes much more sense. Paying $30k for a hit over the loss of $15,000 for artifacts sounds like complete bollocks. However, paying for a hit if those artifacts contained hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of best Thai Number 4 heroin -- given the sort of jail time you'd get in either the US or Thailand for your involvement in such a scheme -- makes much more sense.

"hired someone to kill me" is what crazy people always say.
Also, I don't know Esfandiari really well, but used to play in a home game where he played a few times and really doubt he cheats. He is really really really good at card tricks and could have easily cheated, but either didn't or lost despite it. Also he certainly didn't seem like a cheat.

Tom, you are obviously the guy behind the website, so you seem to be able to cast some light on this story.
Which of these variants are true? Did you arrange to ship him religious artifacts, or did the artifacts actually contain heroin?
Or is there some other -- as yet untold version of the story that you'd like to share -- say one in which Phil is running a child sex brothel for American paedophile sex tourists as a proposition bet?
Would you consider all debts settled for one night with Jennifer Tilly a la Indecent Proposal?

Crazy story funny that he is sharing so many pics and doesnt have one of phil in thailand..
And I like the one where the guy is standing behind Phil, looks like he's lookin down at a PDA or something, and Phil is just being Phil with his hands in the air, waving wildly as he speaks.
Of course this is the guy's proof that he sidled up to Phil and said..."we need to talk." And that was Phil's reaction...LOL
Nonetheless, the guy standing behind the fat Thai lady in a wheelchair is clearly the same guy as the one stalking Phil at the WSOP.
While I've no idea how much of this story is true or false, I do find it interesting that somebody would cross several continents in an attempt to stalk Phil Laak.
Either the stalker is batshit insane, or he's extremely pissed off. Whichever it is, I'm not surprised that Laak appears to be fleeing the scene with some haste.
In short, thread delivers: A++++. Would read again.

On being released from hospital Phil inquired if I would be interested in going into an import/export business with him involving Thai antiques being sent to New York.
I agreed against my better judgment and went to New York to take a look at the shop he was going to open.
Hmm, why would you need to go to from Thailand to New York to look at an unopened shop?
And if all this is true, and Phil had gone to the trouble of leasing a shop, I can't imagine he'd abandon the whole enterprise just because of problems with one supplier. Where is this shop and what's it called?

1. you said a friend told you? how did he hear this ? how sure can you be that theres not a misunderstanding of some sort? (joking, literally speaking)
2. if this were true and a real contract killer hired to kill you, you didnt go to the police ? if u went there, this would be kept secret while the investigations are running and you wouldnt create a website for this, cmon hiring contract killers is serious police stuff, not open-a-website-stuff.

Tom Grant lives in Thailand. Police are bought and sold for very small sums of money in Thailand. Not sure if I would want to use the law to go up against someone who had more money than I do if I lived in that country.

I have lived in Pattaya, Thailand for many years. I have known the person responsible for this story and his wife for 9 years.
No his written English isn't going to win any Pulitzer prizes. No he isn't well versed in forum etiquette. No I wasn't personally involved in the incidents described by him on this thread. No I can't confirm or deny all the details of the episode. For example I don't know what business deals were proposed or why Phil Laak got so angry. No I've never met or talked to Phil Laak.
But..... this story has been common knowledge among ex-pat gamblers in Thailand for several years and I have heard the same facts repeated by several people integral to this story. Namely that after a deal went wrong Phil Laak made contact with a guy living in Thailand and said he wished to pay for a certain person to be killed.
At the time all this happened Mr Laak was neither famous nor rich.
Why has this story become so public at this time ? I have no idea other than I was told the injured party was in Las Vegas for the WSOP and wished to use the opportunity to finally confront Mr Laak, and he was infuriated when he was repeatedly brushed aside and ignored. I don't believe the attempt at talking in person to Phil Laak shown in the photos was the only or first time that the aggrieved man tried to make direct contact in Las Vegas.
I can confirm that the Thai wife in this story is suffering from MS and that it was originally diagnosed shortly after the alleged threats of violence. Stress doesn't help MS, but would this diease have appeared so soon and so aggressively without the threats ? That's an answer that even a doctor would probably struggle to answer.
If a poker magazine wants a real front page story they should send a reporter to Pattaya. I'm sure all the true facts could be quickly uncovered.

edit: by the way, he doesn't really help his case by including the last accusation about both laak and esfandiari. Even if everything he told about thailand was true as a whole it gets a little sketchy if he blatantly accuses phil laak and esfandiari of something totally unrelated and seemingly farfetched as fact.
Laak is unquestionably a scumbag, too much angle shooting and attention whoring.
Esfandari strikes me as a scumbag also, but he's a bit more reserved. I distrust anyone in poker who has spent untold hours learning how to do card tricks.
When you get right down to it all these guys are kind of degenerate scumbags, the big name players that is. Would you trust any of them to give you an even break? Maybe Laak and Esfandari don't stand out afterall.

I have to say, I don't understand why somebody acknowledges that they're a co-conspirator in a scheme to smuggle heroin into the USA inside religious artifacts, but I can easily see how somebody foolish enough to get involved with such a plot might not reckon on having to spend an additional $10k export tax because they were smuggling the dope inside religious art.

in the high stakes games I think the guys you haven't heard of are suckers lets just put it that way.
maybe if i couldn't tell you a story about nearly every well known player that didn't paint him in a bad light I might not be so harsh in my judgment.
I don't think it's impossible to win without cheating (at high stakes) but I think honest players are losing a lot of EV.

Coincidence that this is your first post? This doesn't offer any credibility because the OP has clearly asked you to write this.

Enough said? You're just repeating a "story", as you put it.
Quote:

Why was the "injured party" (who actually suffered no injuries but has apparently received $20,000 from Laak) playing in the WSOP? In the original story, he's not a poker player at all - he just runs a holiday company. Plus this is a bit fishy because isn't poker illegal in Thailand? Maybe you should have asked him why he was there, because if he's not you, he's asked you to post this?
Quote:
I don't believe the attempt at talking in person to Phil Laak shown in the photos was the only or first time that the aggrieved man tried to make direct contact in Las Vegas.
What is the story here? Why is this guy hassling Laak 7 years later, and what does he want? Is it surprising Laak doesn't want to talk to some guy who scammed him (but more likely who he's never even met before) and now seems to be stalking him?
Quote:

This is such bs and this guy's wife's health problems are totally irrelevant the story, whether or not there's any truth in it. And why would the alleged assassin identify himself and tell the target of the request? If he's telling them, then there's no longer a threat and there's no reason for them to be stressed.
This is quite apart from the fact, already made, that there is no logical reason in this story why Laak would want to spend tens of thousands of dollars having a casual business partner on the other side of the world killed, at great expense and risk to himself.
This story has more holes than Swiss cheese and is clearly no more than a very amateurish extortion attempt, whether there's any truth in it or not... better luck next time OP.

I don't really understand the direction that this thread has taken.
- Phil was in Thailand at the time in question
- This story is well known in Thai gambling circles.
- Phil obviously knows the person in the pics and does not want to discuss the incident
- Phil hustled backgammon at Ace Point
- Phil loves the ganja
It seems to me like there is some truth to the story and I find it unsettling and horribly racist that we discount the storyteller's credibility because he is not one of us and because of his poor command of the English language.

I don't know how much of the story is true but it definitely seems that Phil owes this guy money for something and won't pay him. This is the case with many gamblers...prior to making a big score you often have to rob peter to pay paul and people get screwed in between. It's just how it goes.

What a Laak of a story.
But seriously, we need to get serious and start up the serious business of solving this detective thriller in the great tradition and spirit of Sherlock Holmes, Dick Tracy, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Henry Poirot, Nero Wofe, Miss Marple, Jericho, Inspector Morse (and Lewis), Cordelia Grey, and of course Harry Potter.
As potential evidence at our immediate disposal, we have all the exotic locales, obscure lingos, foreign currencies, religious artifacts, candid photographs, illegal substances, famous personalities, cunning alibis, grievous injuries, deadly diseases, motorized vehicles, anonymous confessions, and unsolicited testimonials necessary to solve this whodunnit once and for all.
Now we need to apply our powers of observation, induction, deduction, and most of all logic to establish means, motive, and opportunity.
I would like to begin by offering money as a motive and we should be careful not to exclude marital infidelity and the sex tourist trade from the mix.

I ask that someone with some punch, a journalist for example, should investigate this story. I have no vested in the outcome of all of this other than to defend a friend who did not have the luxury of a university education.
I believe all the important facts in this case can be proved, and this drama will eventually play to a wider audience. This forum is merely a conduit to reach the general public.

I believe all the important facts in this case can be proved, and this drama will eventually play to a wider audience. This forum is merely a conduit to reach the general public.

How could I possibly have left transsexual Thai hookers out of the mix. My bad. Someone let Sklansky know about this thread.

Don't prove nothing Casino Kid, apart from I'm in Pattaya, Thailand and if anyone on this forum is a member of Flickr I can respond to them.
Americans please note....not all good looking chicks have a dick. Don't try to meet the girl of your dreams anywhere near the 'All you can eat buffet'

I'm not reading any further than this, simply because there is no way it would cost $30K to off someone in Thailand. I'm sure Phil could have had this done for $2K if he really wanted.

First of all, who has a fat wife in Thailand? I can't recall seeing one fat Thai male or female the whole time I was there. Maybe she's a good cook.
Strangest thing, seems like some people that are crippled in wheelchairs lose the urge to excercise.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it..............The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." --- Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

So I repeat, someone send a reporter to Pattaya and end this nonsense.
If this matter is of no consequence then I suggest that all the poker heroes could be cast as scumbags and all would be hailed as worthy of idolization no matter what their behaviour.
Are you all so weak ???
BrianBigandfun, you are getting desperate in your responses. PUT UP OR SHUT UP.
