View Full Version : Semi-official Tunica 2+2 meet-up thread Jan 12 or 13 or so??)

Do we have anything planned on this?

A few of us met last year at the Horseshoe for a couple of drinks...most were just taking a quick time-out from their respective games and then heading back before they lost their seat.

It was the first time I had ever met any 2+2'ers live-and-in-person actually. Very weird walking up to complete strangers and saying "Brown trout?" and hoping they actually knew WTF I was talking about.

I think some of you guys mentioned that somewhere in the weekend of Jan 12-13 or something might be the best time for you.

What do people think?

I might even be up for getting as hammered as possible on a 4/8 or 3/6 game in a semi-magoo-like copy.

(if there's already a thread on this feel free to delete or I'll edit it or whatever...just thought I'd get the ball rolling a little bit more)

Assuming my online play goes well, I should have some bankroll to come up there and play in some cash games. It is about an hour drive from Cleveland.

Possible. I was at the Shoe last night at one of the stud tables; the first 2 tables in front. If I'm there, I'll be the one without grey hair /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I browse the forums often (enough to understand brown trout!), but post infrequently

If there's a semi-official meet up, please post -- thanks for starting the thread MicroBob

I could probably make it (from Memphis)

last year there were 7 or 8 of us who met at like 7p on a Friday night or something I think.
We just hung out at that bar closest to the front at the Horseshoe and had a couple drinks.

We could go to that area again although it can get a bit crowded at times.
If anyone has suggestions for other areas and or day/time feel free to submit.

Horseshoe isn't a part of the WPO this year....but they might have a bunch of extra poker-tables open anyway for all I know. Not sure.

There's an enclosed bar downstairs at Gold Strike. And sometimes the upstairs bar outside the poker-room there is open and that would be closer to all the poker action in the convention room of course.

Wherever and whenever is fine with me. Just thinking out loud.

What date are we looking at? I see the Tigers play a game on the 14th. We may could meet up at a bar, watch the game, and then go our seperate ways.

Good idea

Whenever a meeting is arranged, beer and sports on TV are a positive

MicroBob

Doesn't really matter to me.

But remember that many of the 2+2'ers will be coming from out of town and could care less about the Tigers (as could I really).

It was a suggestion. I am sure the bar will have several TVs. I will just make sure one of them is on the U of M game.

Replays at the grand is the best place in tunica to watch sports IMO. Their hamburgers are really good, too. The poker room will comp you their instead of the buffet if you ask.

Might also be interesting to magoo-it-up at some 3/6 at the strike

I hope everyone is making sure to get the poker rates. I just made a reservation for Saturday the 7th. It was 419....The poker rate at the Shoe during the tourney is only 49 bucks!

If I'm not working I'll be there. Gold Strike is having a $500 event every night starting the 9th at 7pm. I plan to play in the 1st event, which should be the biggest. We should all get together and play in that event with a little side action, maybe a last longer? :-)

I called a place that rents out two bedroom chalets by the week. It has a kitchen and fireplace, plus accepts dogs.

I figure if we're going to "do" Tunica, we may as well do it all the way.

Besides, if Glenn doesn't like the games or isn't making any money, he is going to see if he can get a dealing gig instead.

See you there!

I hope...

Chip-do you know what sort of mid-high limits will be spread? 50-100 through 80-160 hold em only?

Chipr777
12-19-2005, 09:23 PM
I imagine you'll find any game you want between Horseshoe, Gold Strike, and Grand. The larger games always go towards the end of the month when all the big players are in town for the main events. We're playing things by ear at Horseshoe but you'll find all the mid limit (20-40, 30-60) you can eat. We'll spread whatever people want to play. It still remains to be seen where the good games will be. This is the first time for two $10,000 events so who knows what will happen. My guess is it'll be a madhouse at all 3 casinos. Horseshoe should be the place to be for mid and high limits.

Matt24
12-19-2005, 09:39 PM
how many tables will be at the Shoe? I was down there last year and it seemed like it was pretty packed in there(the tables that is). I was thinking there was 2 different places where the tables were, maybe one in the original spot and then a bunch out in the middle somewhere. What will it be like this year? Thanks

Horseshoe has a new poker room open. Last year, they had some temp sitting set-up in the middle of the casino floor. I have no idea what they will have this year.

I'll be making my second annual trek to Tunica on the 12'th. I plan on staying until at least the 17'th, maybe longer. Look for me in the 5/10 to 10/20 PL NL games. 43, 5'10", 180, blonde hair, blue eyes, wearing a Texas Longhorns cap or maybe a Nike golf cap. Sorry, no sunglasses. I would love to say hey to some 2+2'rs.

Some seem to like the sports-bar thing at Grand...and I thought that bar at the front of Horseshoe was fine too.

But if it's going to be a lot of us then that might be a little crowded.

Probably 12th or 13th at one of these places would work best I'm guessing and would be the dates that work for most incoming 2+2'ers???

My concern is that if there's a big tourney at 7pm on one or both of those nights then lots would be playing in that certainly.

Matt24

Goldstrike has $500s going every night at 7 I thought.

I honestly haven't looked as I'm not even sure I intend on playing in any of the tourneys. When I go I might play a couple single-table sat's for entry-chips (that you can sell for cash pretty easily) or just the side-games.

Any advice on where to stay? I've looked up some room rates and wanted to cry ($449 for the GoldStrike on 1/14, $369 @ the horseshoe). If there's a decent rate to be had, I think Tunica is the closest B&M to Atlanta and I've been itching to take my online play live for some time.

Or do I take vacation time and stay for the $39/nt weekday rates? Yeah seems like an easy decision huh?

Those rates you quoted are flat room rates. Try to call (800) 303-7463 and ask for extention 5760. You'll be speaking with Laura, in the poker office. Tell her you'll be in town playing poker and I think the rate is $49 through the tourniment. Tell her Todd sent you.

Do I know you, Cass, btw? Or are you just overwhelmed by my moronic posts here?

Are alcoholic drinks free in Mississippi? I'd never drank before last November (2004), so I have no clue. If you do have to "buy" the drink, I'm going for a Grey Goose Bloody Mary. High maintenance /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ho idea.
I live 35-40 minutes away and can show up whenever I want...this is why I'm not taking the lead in setting a time and place on this.
It should be up to those who are only here on certain days and only have certain flexibility.

We could even do a Friday night AND Saturday evening meeting...even in 2 seperate locations (hey...there are two major events afterall).

Something like Friday night at Horseshoe bar for those who want to make it.
And Saturday afternoon/eve at Grand Replays bar.

Something like that perhaps??
Or is this kind of a stupid idea?? (at 6:00am you can't honestly expect me to be know)

We're going to have a lot of people wanting to play one tourney or another I suspect...as well as some people who are 'up there' at the Grand while some are 'down south' at Horsehoe and Gold Strike.

It's really up to all you out-of-towners though as far as I'm concerned.

(sigh - I feel like I'm talking with my GF...
"What restaurant do YOU want to eat at?"
"I don't know. YOU decide."
"I can't think of any place good. YOU decide."
"But I decided last time."
Ohhhh....we could go on like this for hours and hours)

Went to the Memphis Grizzlies game tonight. They have painted WSOP-circuit logos all over the floor as you walk around the concourse. Like dozens of them.

They are also running a TON of radio and TV ads (as well as newspaper) trying to attract local players to break out of their home-game, fix that 'little twitch they have whenever they get a good hand', and take their shot with the big boys at the WSOP-circuit event Jan 4-22 at the Grand in Tunica.

Lots of advertising for this.
(I have to believe there is plenty of billboard advertising too although I haven't seen it).

Haven't seen or heard a peep out of the Gold Strike/WPO for their event though. but obviously that's pretty well known among poker players so I suspect that traffic in their big convention-room area will still be quite high.

If you are wanting to stay right at the action, you will pay more during these dates due to the volume of players and lack of hotel rooms in that area.

If you could stay 20-30 minutes away, you can find good rooms and reasonable rates.

I hope this helps:
Desoto County (MS) hotel listings (http://www.desotocountytourism.com/hotels.htm)

Some of the lesser known towns nearby include:
Hernando, MS - 20-25 minutes away located on I-55
Horn Lake, MS - about 25-35 minutes away; lots of choices in hotels, restaurants and other things
Southaven, MS - about 25-35 minutes away; lots of choices in hotels, restaurants and other things
Olive Branch, MS - 30-40 minutes away; lots of choices in hotels, restaurants and other things

that's a good list.

i can tell you from personal experience that the rooms at the Sheraton are really quite nice. They are all jacuzzi-suites so they could be a bit pricier.
But only $99 during the week usually (we only stay there when we have a coupon and want a quick get-away out of town).

Sheraton also is directly next door to Horseshoe and Gold Strike which means you can easily walk between the 3 of them.
It's the only one of those hotels where you could walk to the poker-action.

Most of the others in that list would be a 3-5 minute drive.

(Bally's and America's Best are next closest...but Fitzgerald's and Sams Town and others really aren't that much farther away).

As was mentioned in the previous post....the hotels in Horn Lake/Olive Branch aren't that far either.

If you're on Goodman road (exit 289 off I-55) it's probably 25 minutes to the GRand and 30 minutes to the Horseshoe which isn't such a terrible commute I suspect.

You would also be closer to Memphis if you have any inclination to tourist-ing Beale Street or Graceland.

I've spent about 6 weeks in Tunica the last 14 months, so I'll chime in.

HOTEL advice: You don't have to pay nearly that much if you don't want to. During the week, it's relatively easy to find a place in town for $50/ night and less. On weekends, you'll have to goto Southaven, Horn Lake, or such for a cheaper rate. Trust me, if you're staying that long, you'll enjoy getting to a place with some civilization.

hmmm....I might be there. I'm not sure yet. I was there all of last year. I'm usually wearing Illinois Fighting Illini gear. I'm a 26 year old stocky white guy (5'8"). I have a barbell piercing through the top of my right ear. Give a holla if I'm there.
