I am new to the game of Backgammon and was wondering if someone could recommend some online reading material for me as well as some good books that I should start with. Thanks for the info.

Backgammon for Serious Players

They're an easy read and provide a little overview of the game.

also, there are several threads in this forum on backgammon with more ideas, etc.
