A friend of mine recently mentioned how great it would be if he could take Adderall for poker due to the increased attention span and sped up thought process. My first reaction was, "you're an idiot." My second thought was, "Is that cheating?"

That's my question. Would you consider a drug that might increase mental capacity an unfair advantage at the poker table? I lean towards no; but I think it could be analagous to steroids in a sporting event.

Your thoughts?

Why not take it to the next level and mix it with coke? Is that possible?

it cant be cheating when adderol is medically prescribed to people with the inability to pay attention to things for an elongated period of time (ADD). if not considered cheating for taking exams and studying in college, why would it be at the poker table?

i think its a good idea but the drug itself should be used in moderation. it has different effects on different people, some of which are bad.

Adderall doesn't increase your mental capacity. It just helps people with attention problems. It is not cheating or unfair to take adderall and play poker.

When you're taking exams, you're not in direct competition with the other students taking the exam. You're taking adderall wouldn't hurt their ability to take the test.

If adderall made you a better poker player, it would stand to reason that it would hurt the other players at the table.

This is also true. Only people who have been prescribed adderall should be using it, and only at the prescribed doses. However, I have known many people who have used it to study for or take a test in college with mixed results.

This is a poor argument if you are saying that it is in fact unfair to be on adderall while playing poker.

Good points. I decided to do a little research on adderall and found it doesn't actually increase your mental capacity, just your attention.

I did however come across an extremely interesting blog on a drug called modanafil which apparently showed increased mental capacity in a double blind study. More interesting is that the blog is titled "Steroids for Poker".

If your attention span sucks so bad you need a drug, then go for it.

How about speed? Hypothetically you could take an 8 ball of meth and be alert for days on end. Increasing your poker winnings drastically. Is that cheating?

No.

normal folks get all pepped up on adderall which degrades their level of play

adhd sufferers benefit greatly from it, but their benefit is no greater than their native skillset; it just helps them cope with their adverse neurochemical-induced tendencies

some adhd sufferers respond adversely to adderall due to the effect it has on norepinephrine levels

[/ QUOTE ] Yes you are, if you do better in a college exam, they do worse as long as the class, like most classes, is on a curve.

[/ QUOTE ] No but it would hurt their ability to get a good grade, see above.

I was going to ignore, but I can't resist: what does it do to your game?

I am just wondering whether I should try playing with you on-line ( /images/graemlins/smile.gif ).

I hope you are not playing with your laptop on your lap. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
