My friends and I are planning a trip to Reno. None of them were willing to pay for a ticket to Vegas so the plan is to drive to Reno instead <sigh>.

Anyone have advice on where to play/stay? My friends are all cheap.

I was there once, last year. All I remember is that the Peppermill seemed nice, but is probably out of the price range for my friends, and Circus Circus was a horrible ghetto (the poker room at least).

I was there a couple of months ago an stayed at the Silver Legacy. The company picked it up and I think it was pricy.

Anyway, I played at the El Dorado and thought it was good. On the weekends they have 2/4, 4/8, 6/12 and a true NL game. It was none smoking during the peak hours. They have coffee and a few other beverages that you can help yourself too, along with a cocktail waittrees running around. I can't remember to many specifics but the normal 5-8 players to the flop, even at 6/12. Good luck.

I stayed at the Atlantis - Cheap rooms in the Motor Lodge (except of course, on weekends where everything goes up) -

The poker room is small, but has TV's and some awesome promotions.

Here's what I wrote about it in my trip report....
I'll take out the part where I was scoping out the dealers in the Halloween costumes. (I love Halloween - it seems like the one time of the year where the girls feel like they can be freaky) - and leave you with the meat of the report.

===========================

Yesterday was the Atlantis in Reno - on Halloween - cool room - the 1/2NL game had a ton of fish dumping, but I couldn't snare one - I was there for 6 hrs and left down 150 dollars of my 200 buyin - but I was the last of the 4 original players on the board - Interesting enough, the other three who lasted as long as me all had large large stacks, from 400-800 bucks on a 200 buyin - but they got that one or two hands where an idiot pushed on a gutshot draw to the idiot side of a st8 that missed - I never got one of those....

<snip comments about my results and dealer's choice of halloween attire>

really good beef stew and a lot of promotional stuff going on - they passed out tickets for a contest running all week on the scores of Monday Night Football and I got one and won a gift from the prize pool, which I chose a clay humidior from. Seemed like they had a LOT of promotions for their players - They also had cocktail waitresses on Monday for Monday Night Football, but they also wheeled a couple kegs of beer in there for players to just walk over and fill up from. Lots of good food and so forth either way and I liked it - felt a bit like a party or a home game with friends, and a lot of them were, and they let me into that group for one night.

so I would recommend both rooms to the casual poker player - I mean, they're not the Wynn or Bellagio, but overall, they're pretty damned loose passive and the locals are mostly friendly. Only a couple of cranky old bastards in the bunch, and I cut one off at the knees on each of my two days.

==============================

SO, I have seen no other poker room, but the vibe and space of Atlantis, plus the feel of the pokerroom, and I would say definately.

Thanks for the info guys. Those are the three places I hit on from my internet searches - sounds like the safest bets.

Just played at the Reno Hilton which I would stay away from. The format there just sucks. I play in the $4/$8 holdem game they had going and the blinds were both $2 and it had a 1/2 kill.

I thought the Peppermill was probably the nicest hotel, though it is outside downtown Reno (it's actually just down the street from the Atlantis). The rooms are a little dated, but still good. The service is great. The sushi at Oceano, the seafood restaurant, really rocks. Peppermill expanded its poker room earlier this year. It isn't set apart from the main casino; it is in an alcove that was expanded into the slots area. It can be a little smoky at times.

Silver Legacy is okay, if a little sterile. They don't have a poker room. I concur with the previous poster re Atlantis -- the room there is small, but the management is nice.

If a poker room is not a necessity, try Fitzgeralds or Golden Phoenix. You should also check out CheapoTravel.com for a review of Reno/Tahoe lodgings/prices.

I've heard good things about Artichoke Joe's, haven't played there though.

Artichoke Joes is in San Bruno, California (just south of San Francisco). A little far from downtown Reno.

Sounds like this post came straight from my mouth. I was also there a few months ago on the company tab. Stayed at silver legacy and played at the El Dorado. The difference was that all weekend, I couldn't get them to get anything bigger than 4/8 spread, even though we had 9 people on an interest list for a 6/12 /images/graemlins/frown.gif Also, 5-8 to the flop at a 6/12 game is normal everywhere.

Played the 4/8 w/ full kill and had a decent time while the wife was checking live poker out for the first time. Still can't get her to play.. more work to be done I guess!

Big fan of the Peppermill cardroom, and casino. Motor lodge rooms are like $29 on weeknights (before any poker rate). Sweet neon as far as you can see.
