Anyone a fan of this software, notably Derivatives III?

Worth the cash?

very good program, kinda difficult to use. its extremely well programmed from a mathematical perspective. i get a free license at school, so im not sure how price factors into it. whats the price?

I use this for analysing all my labs and for various other calculational work required. The program does petty much everything Iv ever needed, though it has a somewhat steep learning curve. If you are a student you can get it for like 300 bucks

I took a class on Mathematica, there are also some pretty good books out there, though the latest one is for v4. I love Mathematica, it's a great tool. I get it free through my school.

Definitely the best mathematics software out there.

I'm a huge fan of mathematica, but if what you are doing requires writing a lot of loops it can be kind of a pain.

mathematica is awesome, im not nearly smart enough to use it extensively though

Now that definitely depends.
Matlab rocks for numerical math.
Mathematica rocks for symbolic math.

From what I understand Matlab has a problem with dealing with extremely large integers.

If by extremely large you mean larger than 64 bit integers then I guess you're right.

That is indeed what I mean. Mathematica on the other hand will happily compute (342! + 7^123)^2 for me.

Indeed. I've never used matlab but hear good things about it.

FWIW I think Mathematica maxes out at around 1.92*10^646456887

I've never really used it, but my adviser when I was working on my MSCS did everything with it. (Including her presentations....I'm happy just using powerpoint! :-p)

Rigth now I'm using a combination of
mathematica
idl
and some matlab
depending on which ones are the easiest to program for a given problem.
