View Full Version : Matusow broke again?

lwlee

Recent Cardplayer interview during the Pokerstar's Carribean Poker Adventure, Matusow mentioned he borrowed money to enter the event.

He blew the million dollars from the WSOP Main Event and said how dejected he was in another interview. Then he wins the TOC Event for another million dollars. But now it looks like he blew that.

Is he going to end up like Ungar, broke or dead in a few years?

I thought Matusow was backed for almost anything he ever does. How does this qualify as news and/or gossip?

Just kidding, but yeah, he has no apprecation for money and does what he can do get by. He's a degenerate gambler.

This is the worst thing a degenerate gambler could do.

The fact that he bought this house to begin with (leaving himself some security. Tying his money up where it's hard to get out) is probably the smartest thing the man has done.

you are assuming that he does not have a mortgage or has otherwise leveraged against it.

The money he won in the WSOP went to pay off debts. And he's a degenerate.

He was interviewed on the TV broadcast of the TOC that he won in November. He said that after his 9th place finish in the WSOP ME, he turned into a recluse, never leaving the house, and losing a ton of money playing online poker and betting sports. He finally got his family to take away his computer, and started playing live poker again, and then won the TOC.

He seems to have a solid group of friends that support him. I think he might be a Jekyll and Hyde kind of guy who feels compelled to act like a jerk at the table to cover his depression and insecurity. He also acts like some constantly going on and off his medications.

He's no role model. I read a partial bio where it said he once lived in a trailer home, grinding out 2/4 limit. When he was younger, he was addicted to video poker. He stole to support his habit. Eventually he found out he had a talent for poker. Not sure if that was a blessing or not.

Mike Matusow will be the first person to admit that he is infact a degenerate. But it is still hard to believe that he blew through all that money already.

He bought his house cash. He can then take out a mortgage against his house. He said his house is his backup plan if he really needs cash.

he's never had a job, never will have a job, plays poker every day, has a million dollar home, travels to every 10k event, does blow, [censored] hookers, and could get staked for every tournament he decided to enter for the rest of his life.

I think my house is the LAST place you would find me if I won a million-dollars.
My biggest risk would be blowing through it too quickly from travelling too much and seeing the world.

Winning that amount of money and just holing-up in your abode attached to your computer is pretty sad.
Blowing through your whole million dollars while you're holed-up is even more pathetic.

How can the opponents who he rips on just let him get away with his little name-calling when he is SOOOO vulnerable?

insult: "The kiddie-game is doooowwwwnnnnn the street."

comebacks for morons (I'm not good at such stuff...but I didn't see anybody else on the tv coverage doing anything at all...and it shouldn't be that hard to tilt him out or shut him up):
"how was prison Mike?"
"such a waste if you win since you'll just go out and lose it all anyway."
"Mahatma and Neverwin are already licking their chops Mike."
"You won a million bucks and just stayed at home on your computer?"
"Ever thought of actually getting a life, Mike?"
"Maybe you can now afford to have that body-hair problem of yours corrected."
"Why are you always twitching and bouncing? Are you still on the crack dude?"
"Hey Mike....a 'friend' of mine needs a little favor. Think you could help us out?"

Talking about comebacks, there was a perfect situation during WSOP ME when Hellmuth went off on the guy who sucked out with a J on the river to make a pair against Hellmuth AK. Hellmuth went ballistic and was bitch/moaning until he was knocked out.

In a previous hand, the guy had lost with a flopped straight to a full house, and he proceeded to complain how bad a beat it was. Hellmuth though piped in saying it wasn't a bad beat because he was behind preflop.

When the guy caught the J, he should have asked Hellmuth, "so is that a bad beat?" /images/graemlins/smile.gif

lwlee

The guys to emulate would be Ivey or Negreanu. Negreanu has become the house now that FCP runs poker and casino games. You cannot imagine the money some of these big affiliates make. Negreanu never has to win again if FCP continues to grow. Ivey is developing into a poker legend playing in the biggest games, though not sure how his money management is when he hits a rough patch.

The context for the comeback was appropriate. It was a smartass comment to shut Hellmuth up. Hellmuth has something to say about everything. He should have keep out of the other hand since he wasn't involved.

When I was watching the TOC show the main reason I would have loved to be at that table was to say to Mike:

"Hey Mike, do you know how to spell New York?"

In my fantasy parts of the crowd would start getting the joke before he did /images/graemlins/grin.gif

But to be honest, he makes me laugh and I think his bark is harder then his bite. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Hellmuth get along quite ok of the table.

(I could be wrong, no poker on television here so I have to get by with whatever I can find)

The thing about a guy like Mike is: he can go from rags to riches within a 5 day tournament. Maybe those financial swings are the excitement that feeds his good play, or maybe I am over psychoanalyzing him too much. I don't care for the guy, but I find him really interesting.

Whatever tournament I just saw him in, he was talking about how he lost everything from the WSOP online - poker and sports - and had to have his parents take his computer away. I give him some props for being so honest, but man, how old is he? That's pretty bad.

They are called NINA loans. No Income No Asset, Usually 50% LTV (Loan To Value Ratio)
Banks / Lenders don't worry about the risk because have high colateral.

From Cardplayer interview a couple of months ago.

Cardplayer - "But you wouldn’t risk your house on poker, especially if you’ve already lost enough money to have gotten to that point in the first place."

Mike - "Sure I would. I’ve done it many times and paid it back."

True, but it sounds like Mike does this (rags to riches to rags) on a regular basis. I.E.: broke before WSOP, cashes for a million....loses 700k after WSOP, cashes in TOC for a million....broke before WPT Atlantis....

going through it right now...simply get a "no doc" loan (no documentation...i.e. no pay stubs etc.). this is riskier for lenders and they require a higher return which leads to higher payments. according to my mortgage guy in derty jerzy where im likely to reside, if i wait until i have my first pay stub to buy a house, the monthly payments and the price of house i can afford will go down and up respectively.
