I couldn't beat anything but a smaller pair. Pretty sure he had the 8 the way he played. What do you guys think?

Your turn bet puts you over the commitment threshhold - if you're not willing to commit all your chips here (not a bad idea, btw), then keep the pot small by checking behind on the turn.

You have position, so you get to see what he bets on the river before deciding to call or not.
