UK gambling advert ban

From the BBC news this morning:

Sorry if this is a repost - I used the search function and couldn't find a post on this (but I suck at search!). Some sites will still be allowed to advertise but only those based in 'white list' countries (UK and EU basically). I am wondering what this means, could it be:

A sensible thing?
Protectionism?
More signs of the Brown administration reversing the pro-gambling measures of the Blair administration?

The latter point is the most worrying - the new Brown government has already reversed the decision to build a 'super casino' and have ordered a review into the 17 other new casinos that were planned. Brown as chancellor set the online gaming tax so high that it was obvious he was deliberately discouraging online gaming firms from setting up in the UK.

Brown is personally anti-gambling (he is the son of a church of Scotland minister) and I have (probably paranoid) visions of him making it more and more difficult over the coming years to play online poker.

Any thoughts?

I agree with Brown's anti-gambling stance and hope that in the future all gambling is banned worldwide. In fact, I think that all forms of entertainment should be banned, and the only thing people should be allowed to spend money on is food, housing, clothing, medicine, and toilet paper. But not the soft kind.

This move will have no real effect on poker. Isle of Man, Alderney, UK, and EEA sites are unaffected. They will likely allow Kahnawake sites to advertise (under review) and certainly will allow Antigua sites to advertise (under review). However, it is no big deal to relocate to Alderney for example, if they do not approve Kahnawake and Antigua.

There is a black list and white list going up. The UK has attempted for awhile now to require some socially responsible behavior by the gaming industry. Not a bad idea, but they are terribly [censored] amateurish. They get credit for trying, but definitely a D- for aptitude. For a country where no one goes to jail for anything, they seem to be saying if you run ads from black list sites, you will go to jail. That right there would concern me free speech wise, but i guess Euros rolled over on free speech in the 30s.

To OP this is old news,it was part of the legislation passed years ago: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2005/50019--q.htm#333 section 331, this is no change of direction (that's not to say that some of the other murmurings from the Brown govt might not be)

To Milton lol at anyone in the US deriding another nations food.

To legislurker, I think you had better look at bit closer to home for worries over gambling freedoms.

I could be wrong but I thought that was the 2005 gambling act that allowed gambling ads in the first place and was about to come into force. The restrictions on who and who can't advertise are last minute changes. There is a pokernews article about it here:

However, your link to the act does seem to indicate that this isn't a last minute change, so I am not sure why the news sites are reporting it as such. Thank you for the link.

I know PokerStars is on the "White List" can anyone confirm if Full Tilt is also on the White List? Are they also Isle of Man?

Can any of our Euro friends tell us with US approved site advertises most overseas?

BTW, I understand we "borrowed" the best food from cultures all over the world, but the food in the US is fantastic... how else do you explain why we're all big as houses over here - well, I mean BESIDES the laziness????

Full Tilt is certified by Kahnawake and won't be allowed to advertise.

This is plain wrong, all they need to do is register in a white list jurisdiction.

Companies are not whitelisted, jurisdictions are.

Kahnawake is under review, in any event.
