View Full Version : Going to Vegas, should I buy a money belt?

URAISEMEIRAISEU

I'll have to carry around 1500 cash while I'm there because my bank doesn't have a branch there. Just wondering if a money belt and a decoy wallet would be a good idea. I'm staying at the stardust and will be walking around the strip quite a bit as I plan on playing at several locations. Maybe I'm too paranoid, but 1500 is kind of a lot of money for me hopefully I will have more by the end of my trip.

No you shouldnt buy a moneybelt silly!, you need a bulletprood suitcase to handcuff to your wrist.

If 1500 is too much for you to lose being jumped or whatever then you probably shouldnt be gambling with that much...just my opinion though.

The Strip is very safe.

Lots of people walk around with lots of money. Nobody is going to notice you at all.

1500 in a money belt? WTF Are you doing, bringing all 1's? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

If it's 100's, it's 15 little pieces of paper. I wouldn't think you'd need this. I've carried upwards of 5k to a poker room, too and from work/car, and so on without ever having a problem.

Note to you idiots: I dont carry this much with me anymore /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I carry one on my video poker trips, but that's because I carry upwards of 8 or 9k and that's too much for my wallet so I have to split it up. And after I'm done I typically have more cash so I need the extra room for the trip home.

Just put your money/wallet in your FRONT pockets, don't act nervous and you'll be fine.

I was just in Vegas for NYears' -- I had about 6K with me and had no problems -- keep everything in your front pockets or wear a light jacket with some kind of inner pocket that zips up. As long as you don't advertise to the world by taking out all your bills at once you'll be fine. If you play good poker, you won't even have to go to your pocket at all /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't sweat it, just keep your wallet in your front pocket. If you want to feel safer, spread the money across a couple of pockets or leave some in the room. No biggie.

Absolutely, you should get a money belt.
Then you could walk around and show people your money belt, and say, "I got $1500, ALL IN CASH, in here!"
Ought to be good for a few laughs.

1500 in Vegas is no big deal. Keep it in all big bills in your wallet, stay on the strip, don't act nervous and you'll be fine. Have a good trip.

According to Froogle, moneybelts are $12.99 at JC Penny. Good thing you've mobilized 2+2 to sort this out before you made that kind of investment /images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I went to Vegas last May, I asked myself the same question, only my question was "Should I buy a utility belt?" I'm not sure why I asked myself that question - perhaps it had something to do with the fact that I had just seen the trailer for Batman Begins. I was too embarassed to ask for advice, so I just went ahead and bought one to be safe. I never imagined how important that utility belt would be. I was playing $5-$10 NL at the MGM grand when I caught quads against an angry drunk's full house. The board was A-5-5-7-9. He threw down his pocket aces in anticipated victory after I called his all in bet, and must have felt I slowrolled him when I turned over my 5-5. Anyways, he lunged at me and began chasing me around the poker room. I ran into the rainforest cafe and climbed a tree, but he kept coming after me. I worked my way to the end of the limb - and fell right into the lion's cage in the lobby! As the lions closed in on me, I closed my eyes in anticipation of my life's end - but WAIT!!! I had my utility belt. Just as Timorah (a 600 lb. lioness) sprung, I shot a grappling hook to the top of the cage and pulled myself to safety. I will never again return to Vegas without a utility belt.

All I can say is this: trust your instict and go with what your heart tells you. You will never regret it.

I have more than this sitting in my wallet.

This must seriously be a joke, right?

I would start to be even slightly concerned until I got to over $10k. At that point, I'd just get $1k chips and solve that problem. You don't need a box until you are thinking of bringing substantially more than $10k.

Wait a sec - so a guy is concerned about losing $1500 and you guys are saying that if he is concerned about losing that money, perhaps he shouldn't be gambling?

What kind of logic is that?

Do me a favor - since you guys are not going to miss it and I could really use it, why don't you all send me $1500. I mean, its such an insignificant amount of money - you would be stupid NOT to do this!

PM me for the details.

i used a money belt when i was in europe to hold my passport/ travelers checks/ large bills.

it made me feel safer then using a wallet, and i also had a wallet with some money in case i did get robbed.

from other posters it sounds like the strip is safe and that having 1500 on you is not a huge amount, but if it makes you feel safer, more secure, then for the $13 or whatever its definetly worth it.

The people who are making fun of this guy for thinking $1500 is a lot of money are silly. Arrogant too. It's all relative -- Bill Gates would laugh at what these people think is a large amount of money as well.

However, posting on 2+2 about whether you need to buy a money belt to carry around $1500 is equally silly. It's not like you're going to have a target on your back if you've got some money on you. It's Vegas, everybody is walking around with money. And regardless, if you think you might need a money belt, just go to the freaking store and buy one for $10 for Christ's sake instead of posting on a message board about it. Seems to me the OP is just trying to brag about his bankroll (which obviously doesn't fly around here), or he's just not too bright.

Why is everyone ignoring this in their efforts to mock him? If his poker bankroll is $7500 and he brings $1500 with him, that is 20% of his money. If he runs good and doubles it, then he's walking around with 33% of his bankroll. Why shouldn't you take some effort to protect it? It's not like he's asking if he should rent an armoured car or something.

If you have to go to a message board for ideas on how to protect your money, you really shouldn't be carrying around any substantial amount of money in the first place.

The reason for the mocking is because his post is pointless. At least once a month we get some form of this post. "I'm going to Vegas next week with $1000... what should I do?!?!?!"

People need to use some common sense.

Serious answer to your question

If carrying that much cash will make you uncomfortable, then by all means get a money belt, decoy wallet, etc.

You probably won't need it, but will be beating yourself up forever if you do get pick pocketed.

Personally, I wouldn't bother, but it's really all a matter of personal comfort.

I was really just wondering how safe it is to walk around on the strip with large sums of cash. Also $1500 is more than I paid for my computer last summer, which I consider to be a major purchase.

Anyway thanks for the responses. I got some good laughs and some good insight.

Real advice: Split it up into front pockets, interior zippered jacket pockets, or a money belt if that makes you feel better. Money belts are still queer.

I had a money belt while in Europe and just left it in my backpack. Thing was a hassle. Just tie it to a Nalgene or something else in backpack and bury it in the bottom. Kinda like just a rubber band and a front pocket.

I dunno,,,,,,,probly should hide in your unerwear so you won't be noticed when you pull it out,,,,

seriously, many wonder why the sarcasm,,,,the reality is anyone who plays mid-limit or above probably carries 3-5 K on them pretty much at all times, not arrogance but I guess we get a kick out of these kinds of posts. Deal with it, I think many of us don't play 1-2 where 100 bucks is a lot of money

FWIW I carry 2 money clips in each front pocket, one with a few hundred in twenties for misc and another with the C notes that I only bring out when I am buying chips, I always carry them cause I never know when the urge to play will hit me and I have never had any problems in So Cal, Vegas Or E Chicago where I play,,,,,

I don't really disagree with this. I was mostly referring to the people mocking the amount of money involved. First of all, the fact that you are carrying less money than other people does not mean that you won't be robbed -- these people don't know how much you have. And second, how much money you BRING is not going to be the same amount that you have at the end of your trip. I would imagine that very few people would not be bothered at all to have a couple thousand dollars stolen, and making fun of someone because they "only" have $1500 that they choose to gamble with is completely classless.

He asked legitimate questions regarding the safety of walking around outdoors and got a number of good replies.

Moneybelts are ridiculous. You need to fold up the money and they don't hold much. Just split it up in a couple secure pockets and it'll be fine.

If someone follows you after they see you cash out then it doesn't matter where it's hidden cause they know you have it. But why would they target you for such a relatively small amount?

You're completely safe in the casinos or in a crowd but you're not necessarily safe walking off the strip to the fleabag hotel you're staying at :-)

Vegas or not, there are a lot of people in the world who would roll you for $1500 and be pretty happy about it.

hint: Keep it in your suitcase when you're home. Makes it real easy to find when you're going on a trip. And if a pat down is imminent at airport security, tell him it's there before he starts patting you down.

I'd suggest a money belt that goes around your waist, not around your neck. I have two money belts and you can put the bills in there w/out folding. I had around 20k in one of the smaller belts too all in 100's. It was bulky and I had to untuck my shirt, but it looked OK.

Keep your regular wallet in your front pocket and/or buy a front pocket wallet. You can get them at marshall fields. If you feel better w/ a money belt get one.
