View Full Version : How should I play against three-bets with pocketpairs?

Since I preflop-raise quite a few hands (15 PFR) I get reraised a lot by aggressive players. I open to around four BB and they raise to about 12-14 BB. Now, I feel comfortable with calling (or sometimes make a four-bet) with JJ+ but lower pairs make me think about whether or not I really get the odds I need to call even.

The players that three-bet me are aggressive and often continuation bet 80% of the times, or even more often. When I flop a set the play is pretty easy, but what do I do all the times when I don't flop a set? Should I bet out or check-raise them with nothing sometimes?

I'm lost here, so any thoughts would be appreciated!

(My last post about this got locked but I didn't get any reason why, so I try to post it again.)

I have read the guidelines. Is this not a strategy question?

calling 3-bets with medium strenth pocket pairs can be a huge leak and you should only do it whith a few things working in your favor.

1. Stack Sizes- Both of you have to be deep. eg. if you and your opponent are like 75 bb deep and u open 66 in the cutoff and the button 3 bets you, calling only for set value is not going to be profitable.

2. Your Opponents Likely Holdings/Range - If you are both deep in stacks and you put your opponent on a monster hand like JJ+ you should call becuase if you flop your set and he flops his overpair, you are likely to stack him. If you dont put him on such a strong holding your implied odds are not going to be as good and sometimes even when you are lucky enough to hit your set you will not be able to extract any value out of your opponent.

p.s. you say your opponents are 3-betting you really light. If that is the case start 4-betting them. Dont make a bad habit of this but sometimes you just have to make a move and push people up against the locker and steal their lunch monies /images/graemlins/smile.gif
