Hi, I am an upcoming freshman of CMU and I've played poker on FTP and PS reguarly.
And I heard US gov.(IRS) is really SOB who try really hard to rob US player's BR under the name of TAX.
Actually, gambling(includes online gambling) is illegal in my country and I didn't pay any taxes in the course of nature.
So I wonder if there is any international student(don't have greencard of course) who withdraws his income to his US account via bankwire transfer regularly.
And if so, I wonder if u pay any taxes to IRS or something.
and plz lemme know if u know any laws regarding this case although you are not an international poker playing student.

A lot of americans are still playing, it's just harder for us to get money on the sites... if you have money on the online sites already feel free to show up and play all you want

I don't think the tax evader's questions related to whether or not he should "feel free" to play poker.

Will you be maintaining your foreign bank account?

Agree. It sounds like the tax evader wanted to know if he can come to our country and use the services the rest of us paid for without paying taxes owed on income earned while here. Apparently, when a foreigner comes here to use our system of higher education, agencies enforcing the laws agreed to by visa holders are "stealing SOBs".

No, you have to thank me since I pay more than 50K per year w/o living expenses and that enables poor kids in ur country to study with lil tution
And I wonder if I am a tax evader.
No one likes tax and I think I don't have to pay any taxes since I don't receive any previlege of being US citizen or something.

I logged on to apologize for my tone in my earlier reply. After reading your response, I changed my mind.

Thank you for ur kindness and I read ur post well.
By the way, I'm not 100% sure, but I think I can get any job since I am an undergraduate student; therefore, I can't report my poker income if it is treated as a job.
And I wonder if you ever transferred your online bankroll to your US bank account(if you have any) since all kinda gambling is illegal in my home country, so I think it would be better to transfer my online fund to my US bank account(I used to sell it to my friends, another 2p2ers, etc).
I want to confirm what I am planning to do is completely legal.

P.S) I really wonder how IRS can tax on US ppl's poker income since it's illegal to play real money online poker as far as I know

You can. Income via gambling is not considered a "job", per se, especially if you're not filing as a professional.

It's not illegal to play poker online in most states. Disregarding that, income is taxable regardless of the legality of its source. Why wouldn't it be? Income is income. The U.S. prosecutes drug dealers, prostitutes, lawmakers who accept bribes, gangsters going back to Al Capone, and many others for tax evasion.

Thank you for ur fast reply.
Could you tell me where most states are?
I think it is a lot easier to list states where playing online poker is illegal, btw. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kind of along the same lines as this thread topic. My friend is from Ivory Coast but has lived in the US on a student visa for a few years, could he play on Party Poker here in the US if he sets up an account with his Ivory Coast address and bank account?
