Hello,
I was just wondering what tournaments pros and others consider the most important and prestigious ones each year.
What is the one tournament you would want to win the most? I think most would say the WSOP Main Event but what about after that?

My opinion is it would go something like this but feel free to give your thoughts and why.

1) WSOP Main Event - I think this will always be the biggest one.
2) WSOP Horse Event - This has become very popular in recent years and really determines the best overall player.
3) WPT Championship - The biggest buy in WPT event and the champion of the WPT is crowned.
4) National Heads up - It's on national TV and the pros seem to love it.

7) WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic (a.k.a. the Doyle Brunson N. American Poker Classic)- Last big LIVE tourney of the year. Mid to late December, $15K buy-in.

8) EPT Monte Carlo- Early April. The Biggest tournament in all of Europe w/ the biggest 1st place prize. '07 Champion Gavin Griffin won $2.4million.

9) Aussie Millions- Early January. Largest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. Huge field, over 700 runners annually.

10) L.A. Poker Classic- Late February. Perenially, the LARGEST WPT field w/ over $2 million for first place and $1 million for 2nd.

Hey,
I decided to bump this because we never really got a good thread going on this a while ago.
It seems like all of the big ones are already done for the year.
Anyone have any other opinions as to the biggest and best tourneys of the year?

AZ State Poker Championship.

$250,000 first place
$15,000 fourth place
$1,500 tenth place

It's actually the best lottery of the year, not tournament.

WPT at any of the Borgata Tourneys. Borgata Poker Open is in one month and the Borgata Poker Classic is in January. Just because that is the only good tourney that comes through Atlantic City.

LOL, it's only been a 50k event for the last 2 years. As for "very popular", less than 200 people have entered it both years, less this year than last year.

Good Point Photoc!
Both the WSOP HORSE and the National Heads Up which I had in my original post probably can't be considered the BIGGEST because they get under 200 players but most would probably consider both in the Top 5 as far the BEST and MOST PRESTIGIOUS tourneys of the year.

That brings up an interesting angle.
Which tourneys after the WSOP Main Event get the biggest number of entries every year?

After, not during. WPT Championship gets a good turnout, as does the USPC at the Taj. The Legends at the Bike does well too.

I assumed he meant "after" in the sense of "after" in the ranking list of tournaments by # of entries. And if you are going chronologically, isn't the WPT Champtionship before the WSOP? Depending on how you think of it, every tournament, including WSOP prelims, is both before and after the WSOP main event.

There are several preliminary tournaments that draw more entries than the typical $10K WPT event. For example, the $500 buy-in tourney to kick off the Borgata Poker Open next month will probably draw 1200.

As far as big events go, the Aussie Million, the EPT Championship, WPT in Aruba, and the LA Poker Classic are probably the biggest draws. The USPC gets far fewer entries than most WPTs.

The one at the Borgata earlier this year was crazy. About 1400 for the first 500 tourney. There will probably be a similar number this time too, maybe more since it is two days after Labor day and there might be alot of vacationers still in AC that week. If you are planning on playing, sign up in advance. The line was waaaay long on the morning of the tourney. Looks like 6 weeks of good poker in AC. Borgata starts September 3 and goes 2 1/2 weeks and then the USPC starts at the Taj for 2-3 weeks.
