Montel Williams and the Missing Chips

Montel Williams opened his bag over at Table 78 to discover that he had 5,000 fewer chips inside than the total that was written on his bag. Tournament Director Jack Effel was called over to address the issue and told Williams that they will go to the surveillance tapes to determine what happened.

Did someone miscount his chips or is a theft a real possibility here? What happens to the chips from the time you bag them to the time you un-bag them?

Montel Williams Chip Mystery Solved

Tournament Directors Jack Effel and Jimmy Sommerfeld went to the surveillance tapes regarding Montel Williams' missing 5,000 in chips and discovered that the chips were mis-counted before they went into his bag at the end of Day 1. Williams indeed had the correct amount in his bag (15,900) though 20,900 was written on the front and included in the official end of Day 1 chip counts.

Williams was satisfied with the ruling and thanked them for their efforts.

How can their cameras pick this up when they can't even pick up a tabled winner that was pushed to the wrong person (RWIII)?

Cameras have trouble making out the cards. If the lights are brihgt enough for the players to be comfotable it "bleaches" out the cards so they can't be seen. The texture of chips is such that this doesn't occur.

RR - What about the possibility that there were no cameras focused on this table at the time this happened and that they just SAID that their cameras picked that up so that everyone would be happy.

I'm not entirely convinced that they actually found that spot on the video every time they say they do but this is just a total guess by me with absolutely zero foundation.

In Montel's case with a sealed-bag it seems pretty likely they just counted the chips wrong when they put them in so whether they actually had it on video or not probably doesn't matter a whole lot.

Since the player is responsible to count his/her own chips and note the amount on the bag I would say that Montel counted one too many orange chips. No tournament official audits the amounts or counts the chips. This is a case of operator error.

i dont know... ive never been in the wsop... but i'm pretty sure when i left, i'd have a really good (like, you know, exact) idea of what my chip count was

besides... didn't any of the sites following the event have his count followed?

pokernews has his last live count at the end of 1b at

"15000 19000 2007-07-08 02:57 PST"

but his final day count at "Montel Williams 20900"

did they look at his bag? ask him? etc? i mean, if there's reason to suspect the casino, there's always ways to find out

We get end of day chip counts from Harrah's. Harrah's get their counts from the amount written on the bag. Montel had 20,900 written on his bag despite having only 15,900 in the bag. Therefore, Harrah's reported it as 20,900 and so did we, when in fact, Montel only bagged 15,600 (which was confirmed by the cameras).

It was all explained here: http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/blog-tags/Montel+Williams/
