No first hand experience, but IIRC you can pick which day you want. However, last I heard about a week ago Day 1A was sold out. They were trying to keep the number of participants on each day balanced. Someone speculated that they would open more spots once they sold more seats on the other days.

Matt Jansen First Player Eliminated
The remaining players in the room let out a collective sigh of relief as they discovered that they were not the first player to bust out of the WSOP Main Event.

The first player to bustout was Matt Jansen. His Ad Ah lost to Geroge Dolofam's Kh Qh. All the money went in on the flop of Jh Th 5h.

"No more hearts!" screamed Dolofam.

The turn was the 6c and the river was the 3c. His flush held up as Jansen was the first player eliminated from the 2007 WSOP.

Early Departure for Chris Reslock

On a board of {Q-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} Chris Reslock checked under the gun, the player on the button pushed all-in for 8,300 and Reslock called. Resolck was on a diamond draw with {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} against {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} for two pair. But there was no diamond for Reslock when the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} came. Reslock will have to wait another year for his chance at the World Champion gold bracelet.

This hand absolutely cannot be reported correctly unless both players were employing the "double-up early or go play side games" strategy.

Best Line this series (the last line the paragraph.)
From PokerPages.com

" I did see the first player of the event bust out. It was of course with pocket aces. The flop came with three hearts and the player with aces (he had the ace of hearts) decided he was going to risk his tournament life and $10,000 with it. His opponent had flopped a king high flush and pleaded with the dealer to not deliver another heart. The dealer complied and our first player eliminated becomes an instant celebrity as he was swarmed by media asking for details of the hand. Yes, it's good to be famous because you suck.

Jeff Madsen: Prop Bet Loser

Jeff Madsen was the unfortunate loser in a three-way WSOP prop bet between himself, Gavin Smith, and Joe Sebok. Based on a point system that measured their success in the preliminary no-limit hold'em events, Madsen came up short and per the terms of the bet, was forced to play his Main Event Day 1 in a jester suit.

i said that the 1,250 is a speculative #. i didn't realize it was released to them by the WSOP, but even then it doesn't include alternates.

Durkee showed {J-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and was out front with two pair. His opponent turned over {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. um... did i miss something or did he push 100 BBs over 2 limps and TT called ?

[/ QUOTE ]
It probably was a raised pot and A.S. overbet pushed with AK and was called by TT.

[/ QUOTE ]

ya... it must be wrong they are at either 100-200 or 200-400 when this happened and that would be one ridiculous push over 2 limps

Brad Garrett Doesn't Play Well, But He Knows How to Celebrate

With the board showing {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Hearts} on the turn, Brad Garrett faces a bet of 3,000 from his opponent. Garrett holds up his cards -- {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, and says he doesn't know what he should do. Ray Romano walks over, and Garrett asks him what he should do.

Romano, understanding the rules of the game, tells Garrett that he can't offer any advice. Unclear as to what to do, Garrett simply calls the bet and opens up his hand on the table. His opponent says, "Okay, I guess we'll check the river."

The river card is the {K-Clubs}, and Garrett cheers. His opponent mucks, and Garrett takes the pot.

Flush with the adrenaline of victory, Garrett proclaims that he's buying a round of massages for his entire table. But it's not coming out of his pocket, because according to Garrett, "It's on Ray Romano!"

When Romano complains, Garrett jokingly says, "Get out of here, Ray, and go back to your mansion, and your servants, and your jets."

Shouldn't exposing his hand before showdown merit some sort of penalty?

Why would someone fold aces in that spot? Was it a strong read, or just the fear of losing to someone in a jester costume?

Bobby Baldwin: Expert Negotiator
There was a dispute at Bobby Baldwin's table between two players. Player A thought he was shorted 12K in a pot.
Player B felt that he owed too much. Three different tournament directors were called over and they could not make a decision. That's when Bobby Baldwin stood up and helped recreate the hand. Even though he wasn't there from the beginning of the hand, he was able to figure out the hand to the proper satisfaction of all parties involved.

"Unfortunately, Brian Townsend busted out during the last hour. He had drifted down to around 16k and raised A,J on the button to 1200. One of the blinds shoves for 14k. Brian went with his read that the player was weak and called. The player turned over K's and Brian's day came to an end shortly after. On his way out he saw Bobby Baldwin, confirming their big game was on for tomorrow."

It is standard to call a push from the blinds when you raise from the button with AJo. In this case the push was an overbet, which might indicate a decent hand, but people don't usually play big pairs that way. There is some possibility villain is restealing with a weaker ace, suited connector or something. With the overbet, I would be a little worried about AK/AQ or maybe an underpair.

So possibly you are a little ahead, every one in a while you are way ahead, and most of the time you are slightly or way behind. For all your chips, facing a big overbet, in pretty much a nothing pot, early in a deep, slow-structured tournament where you figure to have a huge skill advantage.

The flop comes Q 5 4 and the worst hand takes the lead. The turn is the 2 giving Dutchak more outs. The river is the A, giving Dutchak top set and the pot. He takes the chip lead at $195,000.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was the poor schlub who couldn't fold his KK.

We were at level 5 with the blinds at 300 and 600 with a 75 ante. Our table was ten-handed at the time so there was 1,650 in the pot.

I was UTG with Kings and raised to 2,000. One player calls. John Dutchak is on the button and raised to 7,000. A third player is in the small blind and as I'm contemplating how much I'm going to reraise, he starts counting out chips for another raise. He made it 20,000.

I started the hand with 60,150. Both players had me covered.

Dutchak had been particularly aggressive in the last few hands including raising out of the blinds with ATo and showing the table. He certainly didn't need AA to reraise pre-flop.

The small blind was a bit erratic. He had made quite a few pre-flop reraises and flop raises against pre-flop raisers during our 7 hours of playing together. Still, his 20,000 raise had me a bit unnerved.

With 2,000 in the pot already, I decided on an all-in or fold approach. And, of course, I made the wrong choice.

Dutchak called right away and I was sure I was beat. I was surprised when the Small Blind also called for all his chips (about 45,000 more). I was actually worried for a second that it could be AA vs. KK vs. KK but hoping for AA vs. KK vs. AA.

Andy Black Eliminated

In two hands and in quick succession, Andy Black is out.

First hand:

A player limps, Black raises to 24,000 on the button, and his opponent calls. The flop comes J-10-6 with two hearts and both players check. The turn is the {8-Diamonds}. Black's opponent checks, he bets 8,000 and is called. The river is the {3-Hearts}. Black bets 15,000 and his opponent calls. Black announces he has nothing. His opponent has 7-7 and takes it.

Second hand:

Soon after, Black is busted when on a 3-4-3-7 board, Black bets, another player goes all in, and Black calls with 4-5. His opponent has A-A, the river is a jack, and Black is out and leaves in a hurry.

Black was the chip leader for a good part of the day, but it did not last.

nice tried to bluff a calling station

"Luke Staudenmaier was the first player to bust out of the 2007 Main Event when, three hands into the tournament, his pocket Aces were cracked by an opponents' Ace-King after the two got all their chips into the pot before the flop."

That is something i can not understand. 20000 starting chips, 1st level and they get all their chips in preflop...What is this, an internet freeroll tourney???

Of course not, but that other guy with AK must be a huge idiot. Also I am trying to imagine how the hand went preflop. Raise, reraise, allin? This stage of the tourney?

Black's world is a game of give and take...or take and give. Whatever the case may be, Black can't seem to handle a big chip stack well. The guy just seems to constantly blow up by making crappy calls and bluffing the wrong players.

Shouldn't exposing his hand before showdown merit some sort of penalty?

[/ QUOTE ]

Only if he does not expose both of his cards - rules...if I remember correctly, state that they both have to be shown.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are correct on that rule, but it's not the correct rule to apply. It would be if they were playing a cash game.

[ QUOTE ]
A player who exposes his cards during the play may incur a penalty but will not have his hand killed.

[/ QUOTE ]

Exposing your hand early in a tournament affects every player, is a rule violation, and deserves a warning at the very least.

Surely that report cannot be right? In hand 1 the blinds are 400/800 right, and Black makes it 30bbs with no raise in front. Surely not.

Cardplayers account seems more accurate.

Black Busts

Andrew Black raised to $4,200 from the button and his opponent called from the cutoff. The flop brought the J 10 6 and both players checked. The 8 fell on the turn and the player in the cutoff checked. Black bet $8,000 and his opponent called. The 3 fell on the river and once again the player in the cutoff checked. Black bet $15,000 and his opponent quickly called with 7 7. Black mucked his hand, clearly frustrated. A few hands later he moved in on a flop of 4-3-3 holding 5-4, only to run into the A-A of an opponent. After the turn and river bricked off Black was sent to the rail

thats some class A tilting from Black, word is he shoved 45k on that 433 flop

CO limped 77 and Black raised from button. Black 2-barrels and CO calls him down. Kind of standard.

Black obviously built his big stack through aggressive play, and those that live by the sword die by the sword.

Correct. Yeah blinds should be 500/1000/200, so I'm not super-worried, it's just frustrating cuz I had more than that at the end of level 1. Such a roller coaster, you know how it goes.

Congrats Justin on amassing that badass stack.
