I wasn't sure if I should have called the first bet, and then after it got raised, should I have smooth called again and waited for the turn to push?

Raise behind. You are effectively telling your opponents that you have a huge hand. I dont think I have ever seen someone bluff in a spot like this. You should have raised the first time the action came around to you. As played, I agree with raising. Your hand is too vulnerable. Besides, a lot of people at 25NL will happily stack you with set/two pair here.
