in general re. 3betting with AQ - when they call, should I assume I am behind most players' range?

No to your question. Most players at NL25 are 4betting hands ahead of your range, with possibly AK being the exception. They have mid - low pp's alot of the time here.

As this hand played, bet the flop. You will take it down a large percentage of the time. When called, you can play it cheaply from there, or if raised you can fold.

As played folding the river is fine.

definitely bet the flop, you represented a big hand like QQ+, AK, AQ. at least thats the range the villain will put you on. all of those hands except AQ flops at least TPTK (AK) here (QQ,KK: set, AA overpair). bet $5 on flop take it from there...
