WINNIPEG police are saying very little about a raid Thursday night that shut down an illegal gambling operation in the Corydon Avenue area.
Police would only say that several individuals were arrested and face charges of illegal gaming.

Police had cordoned off a portion of Corydon Avenue near Daly Street, as they searched an area business and made several arrests.

Police said they would release more details on the illegal gambling operation next week.

Apparently they attempted to raid three clubs, but the third didn't have a game going at the time. So nothing happened there.

We have one casino in this province that spreads poker. Six tables, LHE only. The clubs offered NL and PL holdem and were quite popular.

By law people running the club or in the club at the time face up to two year less a day in jail.

LOL, this is outrageous. I haven't been to a club in a long time but the last time I was there you could just walk in and register. Definately come to Ontario, there's clubs all over the place.

I used to play this club regularly. They had been busted before and shut down for running tournaments but since the paperwork did not mention cash games they kept running them.
Looking at their website it looks like they brought the tournies back and this happened. I'm glad I felt like playing FL that night.

[/ QUOTE ] No offense, but cops likely host a huge game in every major city in N America including Winnipeg. Whomever was running these games was likely awful naive to not cut the Polics in at the outset.

Police raid poker clubs, more than 60 people charged
By Paul Turenne

Three Winnipeg clubs have been accused by police of illegally profiting by holding Texas Hold'em poker games and taking a cut of the money.

The Barca Club, the Bari Club and Shooter's Billiards were raided last Thursday, along with a Tuxedo home belonging to one of the club's owners.

Six people were charged with keeping a common gaming house and 57 people who were in the clubs at the time were charged with being in a common gaming house.

Police say the clubs were allegedly taking a "rake," meaning a portion of each cash pot went straight to the house, likely tax free.

Other ways some of the clubs were allegedly making money included not paying out 100% of tournament entry fees or charging exorbitant prices for food and drinks.

Police did not release the names of any of the people involved, pending their first court appearances.
