Article in Duke Chronicle (http://www.chronicle.duke.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/4342642641b19)

Has anyone ever made a fold like this before? Were you that afraid of winning and getting beaten up or having your money stolen?

Otherwise, well-written article

Hah, that's pretty funny actually. If he was actually and truly afraid of getting beaten up, then nice fold. If not, nice story.

I think I woulda popped pre-flop up though to about 250 instead of 300.

To my knowledge there are no Mafia run or owned poker rooms in NYC during the time that Strassa has been playing poker. And when was the last time you heard an eastern European accent from someone in the Mafia? Something about this story doesn't add up. I want to believe Strassa, but it seems as if he embellished the story a bit.

I have heard of one such club.

Why are you writing about this [censored] in the Chronicle? Has your legacy of a "poker star" really grown this much since I left?

Pure rubbish and fluff. Just like his SI article.

10-06-2005, 01:56 AM
what was rubbish about his SI article?

the story in this thread is not unfounded, he may be embellishing it to a certain degree, but he's not making the nature of the club/people up.

And I don't even think he's embellishing. I believe every word of it.

But it's foolish to think that the owner of the club is going to do anything that would give the impression that winners don't get paid in his joint. Even Al Swearengen would treat you fairly.

I got a great title for that article. Since you were so wrong when you interpreted his tantrum for a threat, we should call this piece:

I one time played in a club like this. Mafia-owned, owner playing. Owner had thick european accent. Anyway, similar hand came down where I had the nuts. We got all-in, owner was all pissed and stuff. But, when his goons tried to rough me up, he was like, "NYET! HE BEAT ME STRAIGHT UP! PAY THE MAYN HEEES MONEY!" That's just the way gamblers are.

Clearly he was being cold-decked. There was a 2 outer ace suckout coming on the turn.

Great fold!

Wasn't there a hand like this in Rounders? Matt Damon folded the nuts but they turned it up and all hell broke loose.

I think you're referring to the hand where Damon had something like A5 on an A53 board and laid it down due to the oreos.

Nyet. I got a ton of PMs on this from NY'ers who claim they knew the club he was talking about, and I'm here to tell you that the one everyone referred to is not mob owned (nor is it located in the 20's). My associate tells me the room everyone seems to think is mob owned has been open for decades legally as a social club, and is the only club remaining that actually can legally host poker games. I haven't found out why they are allegedly legal so I cannot confirm this yet, but this comes from someone who used to be the floor at the Mayfair many years ago.

Regardless if it is true or the wild imagination of a 21 year old expert player who saw too many movies, claiming there is mob controlled poker in NYC within a collegiate newspaper is very bad for us as a community for obvious reasons.

PS: I saw nothing wrong with Strassa's interview in SI, it helped 2+2's business and I like that.

a lot of criticism here for an innocent piece of most likely embellished non-fiction. who cares if this never really happened? or if it did? is that really the point?

i think most players who venture away from the internet and casinos have run into similar situations where they were afraid of not getting paid, or beat up, or mugged, or not allowed to play in a game again after scoring a big win. It comes with the territory.

it's naive to think you're always safe when playing in unlicensed clubs and home games.

Its ambiguous how directly the club is owned by the mob, so if you want to call that embellished then fine. There is one armed person in the club that plays but is also responsible for 'security'.

The fold really did happen. There are some pretty funny things in this thread... Just take the column for what its worth, which isnt so much, just something fun I do in my college newspaper which is usually about sports... However Duke football fcking sucks and no one wants to read about field hockey.

This exact scenario has been played out in poker literature more than once. If true, (which I doubt), the writer showed terrible judgement in at LEAST 2 areas. I personally think is BS tho.

Yawn..

P.S. To the poster who said it was very well written/put together, I submit;

"Now if only I could get that $3,000 back."
