This should be pretty easy

If hell is simply removal from god, then hell.

If hell is like Dante's Inferno (or worse), then non-existence.

This has to be the lamest joke ever or the stupidest idea ever.

So an eternity in extreme pain is preferable to not existing? Maybe you should get back to us on this one after a few weeks in extreme pain.

I wouldn't normally post song lyrics, but given the relevance of this topic I feel justified.

Carcass - Go to hell:

*****
Some people aren't cut out to be saints,
and since i was born in original sin,
hedonism has a certain attraction
i think i'll cut the crap
cut out the middle man

and go to hell
i've sold my soul,
so when my body goes cold i'll
go straight to hell
go to hell
won't you be told?
I've sold my soul
go straight to hell

your paradise doesn't sound too fetching
it's not only your souls which must be lost
"hell is other people",
yeah, too right, my hell is you

the sins of the flesh sound so appealing,
so let me wallow in my guilt
your hell will be my heaven,
so let's turn up the heat,
let eternity begin

and go to hell
i've sold my soul,
so when my body goes cold i'll
go straight to hell
c'mon
let's go to hell
won't you be told?
I've sold my soul
go straight to hell

let's burn in the flames, yeah!
*****

Bottomline is, if hell means eternal suffering, whatever that is for each person, then no one would in their sane mind choose it. But hell is vaguely defined at best.

Even if it was objectively defined, some could most definitely choose it, because it couldn't mean suffering adapted to each individual's desires.

I haven't ever knowingly met a person who thought of Faustian hell before that of orthodox Christianity.

Hey Cam,

Which is which? All I remember of Faust is that he tried to make a deal with the devil, like in that Charley Daniels song. I don’t know what orthodox Christianity thinks. I get mixed up with Notready and Peter666. Do they think of Dante’s inferno as hell? Or removal from God? Did Faust get screwed on his deal?

Actually, I was going to start with, "If Hell is other people, then ..."

But I couldn't decide whether or not I preferred it to non-existence. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Faustian Hell, IIRC, is the torment of being deprived of eternal bliss after having experienced it once before.

Oh, definitely infinite suffering for all eternity, yeah. That would be much preferable to being asleep forever. I mean, wtf?
