was in Vegas a couple weeks ago in a low stakes tourney. 3 left and we chopped the prize. I ended up with $1200. Put my name down for third and about $750, so Id have the least tax taken off. Still had about $250 deducted on the spot for taxes. I have the form from the casino, just not sure what I can do with it, if anything, to get some or all of that $250 back? From what I can find online, I need to submit a US tax return and demonstrate my gambling losses? The only "proof" I would have is that I took money out of my bank account. Would this work?

You won the money in the US, so the US wants its cut.

What you have been told about filing a US tax return is correct. It would not have to be a full tax return assuming this was the only money you made in the US. I am sure there is a form for this on the IRS website (but you will have to do the search).

Right now, before you forget, write down every bit of gambling you did in Vegas: the game, the casino, the day, the amounts wagered, and the amounts won or lost. Better still, if you used a players card each time, the casinos may give you this information. If that shows that you lost more than you won, you can get your $250 back. KEEP THOSE RECORDS.

Lotta work for $250, I am sure the government hopes you will just give up.
