I often see comments from HH posters like "Villain is 38/24 over a smallish sample".

What does this and similar statictics mean?

I'd be grateful to anyone kind enough to enlighten me.

It's how many hands he plays/how many hands he raises pf (in percentages). Try FAQ and the sticky, it's all there.

Villian is the slang term for the opposition. When it is used, the hand is played heads up post flop.

38 = VPIP (which is how many hands the Villain puts $$ into the pot voluntarily...ie. Sees a flop) as % figure.

24= How often the Villain raises pre-flop (as a percentage figure).

Smallish sample = How many hands the Hero (you) has captured of the Villians play. These hands are captured using tracking software like Poker tracker...

hope this helps, Jake

If you want to play online poker seriously, it is definitely worth it.

You definately need to have pokertracker and pokerace hud if you intend to play poker at all seriously. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you learn to use the stats your game becomes infinately better.
