I guess this guy is just tricking me into calling on the river by checking when the spade comes up on turn. But what can I do to spot this and prevent it?

What do you beat that leads the river? If you are going to call a river bet here, make a bet on the turn. I think you can find a river fold as you don't even have TPTK

Edit: alot of times checking hte turn induces river bluffs that you have to call. This is why I like to be aggressive on the turn even tho the draw just got there. If you get c/red or called you shut down

But when I have no reads on the villain and no stats, how can I be sure he is just not pushing with 95o or a pair of eights?

As played if you check the turn you must CALL the river...You checked to induce a bluff and for pot control..I would bet/fold the turn...
