So while I was in vegas I saw in a couple of cardrooms a sign that said something about Nevada state law allowing the use of shills and prop players. That got me to thinking, what exactly is the difference between a shill and a prop player? I've always thought they were one and the same.

Shills play with house money, props play with their own money and get to keep their winnings.

Are props paid by the hour or do they have some kind of rakeback system?

By the hour. Amount varies by room and limit(s) played.

shills are generally looked down upon, while props are more accepted...apparently.

They also exist online as I am one, a prop that is. I don't even know if shills exist online, I doubt they do.

At what limits? When I see 50k+ people on a site, I gotta think, why do they need props?

Mostly at smaller sites but some medium sized ones, pay is 100%+ rakeback. You can play whatever limits they offer, I play 5/10 and 10/20 but I know those who play higher. PM me if interested.

I know it says in Nevada that props/shills will be identified if you ask...anyone ever ask? Seems like a nitty thing to do...

Are dealers who get on the play list considered props? Are they getting their normal wage or are they considered to have taken an EO?

I assume that off duty dealers are not considered props if they are allowed to play in their room. Is this correct?

One day people at the table were babbling about props and shills and someone was being annoying about it. I don't remember exactly what about it was annoying me, but I just wanted to end that debate. So I motioned the floor over and asked him to identify any props or shills. He laughed and said they have none, have never had any, and have no plans to have any.

A dealer who normally deals and puts himself on the play list gets an EO, and in most places they wouldn't get paid.

In Los Angeles most clubs do not discourage dealers from playing in their own room, but some of the better playing dealers try to play in other rooms so they won't hurt their tips by playing hard against everyday customers.

There is a category of dealer who is a type of silent prop. He or she gets dealer wage (and health benefits) and is on the dealing staff, but it's understood they do not have to deal unless their is some sort of huge shortage that day. He or she clocks in as a dealer and usually plays in the top section and is treated like a normal player. In most cases the top section host or lead floor has little control over their play (IOW,, they don't get up for customers). In my experience these dealer/players are rarely good for the top section (i.e., no action, take too many out buttons, not social, etc.).

At Bellagio dealers on the "play list" stay on the clock. We can get picked up at any time to start dealing a game. It's regular pay- $6hr. This is true in many places too. I tend to go the other way from what Rick says. And if a place doesnt allow dealers to play in that location, I dont work there. Not that it means anything. Just that it's obvious it isnt being run as a poker room and locals are telling management how a game should be run. You know the whiney nits that cant stand to have a tight-ass raiser in the little 3-6 game or 1-5 stud game. It isnt about shi.itting where you eat unless you are a dealer with a bad attitude and do crappy things at the table when playing.

Most places dealers that sign the play list remain on the clock (I know of one, but have never worked in a casino that required poker dealers to clock out to play on shift). Generally the players that don't like to play gainst dealers only get upset when they lose; they are happy as long as the dealer sits there and plays at least as bad as they do.
