Charles Town Races & Slots seeks June 9 table games vote (10:55 am)
The Associated Press

Following the lead of three other West Virginia racetracks, the Charles Town Races & Slots asked Thursday for a June 9 vote on whether to allow blackjack, poker and other table games at its Eastern Panhandle casino.

John Finamore, a vice president with track parent Penn National Gaming Inc., appeared before the Jefferson County Commission to ask that voters there consider the issue on the same day as Ohio, Hancock and Kanawha counties.

The commissions in Ohio and Kanawha counties have already scheduled June 9 votes on whether to allow table games at Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming Center and Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center in Nitro.

The Hancock County Commission was set to vote Thursday afternoon on the same date for Mountaineer Racetrack & Gaming Resort in Chester.

Finamore said Charles Town has been polling potential voters to decide whether to seek a vote this year or next year and found "very encouraging'' results that indicated it should move soon.

The date is also appealing, he said, because it's a Saturday around the time schools let out for the summer, but before families begin vacations.

Charles Town would start out with 75 table games, most likely in the first quarter of 2008, Finamore said. They would offer blackjack, craps, roulette and "carnival games'' like Caribbean stud, three-card poker.

Traditional poker games such as Texas Hold 'Em would be added later, after the casino's new 153-room hotel opens. That could happen by July 2008, he said.

Not really "good" news as all 3 of the other tracks have already planned on having poker much earlier than this.

I just saw on the local Pittsburgh news (WTAE) about this and they said that poker would be the first to be added (Fall 07) then more 'difficult to manage' games like baccarat, craps and blackjack. Can't get any direct sources other than what I heard on the local news....but we can hope.

Well I've heard (on either WBOY or Dominion Post) that Wheeling Downs and Mountaineer Gaming were hoping to have some poker games ready within a couple of weeks of it passing.

Also I would like to add...anybody that lives in the counties that has a casino needs to show your support! While most of the communites do support table games the oppisition is really starting to make their voices heard.
