How would you have played this hand to get more money from him? I'm asking because my play was probably not optimal. I guess the river check was weak because the flush was unlikely. What do you think?

Hmmm...

Either c/r or lead the flop, I prefer lead. As played, your turn c/r is wayyy too small. On the river, as played, lead out here pretty much all in.

Ideally, your line should be

Bet flop, c/r AI on turn.

"Button raises to $1" = big cards/big pairs

Checking flop, checking turn, checking river is very bad...
Bet pot, Bet pot, All-in / or Bet pot, All-in

What I've noticed more than anything else is that uNL players like to try to slowplay more than anything else. I'd suggest you read sklansky's NLHTAP. You have a pretty disguised hand, and he raised preflop, you definately want to lead this flop.
