This is fine, but if he raised you any more, you should definitely be folding. You have to call here with your OESD and top pair though. Well played.

How big a bet do we call on the river here? (Granted, this isn't a bet but an expensive check)

I probably wouldn't consider calling over half pot (still kinda spewy).. I just don't see how we're good very often.. Is he raising A7 on the turn?

If it were any higher limit, the standard line (I believe) would be to check behind on the turn for pot control and to not go nuts and get stacked with top pair. This action may well induce a bluff on the river as well. As played, you did fine.
