View Full Version : Three vices: Gambling, Drinking, Women...

A great piece of advice somebody once gave me was--

'You can only commit to one vice among: gambling, drinking[drugs], or chasing women, to spend your efforts on.

Pick one and stick to it, because doing 2 will leave you broke and homeless, and all 3 will likely kill ya. '

I.e. You can drink a lot, but then attempting to gamble and chase women is a really bad idea. You can spend a lot of your time gambling, but then also drinking a lot is a bad idea. [smart poker playing <> gambling, as we know.]

True/false?

My life is almost 100% composed of gambling, drinking, and women. I'm neither broke nor homeless yet, though I might be knocking on your door come 30. And if they kill me, at least I'll have died happy.

Najdor,

I can exclude gambling, though I love to gamble it doesn't and hasn't ever consumed me. I control that part of my life very well, it is basically just something for the competitive juices. I actually get bored very easily with gambling.

I used to combine drinking heavily (some drugs) and women. What I found is that when I combined heavy drinking/drugs that it wasn't women that killed me it was that I was continually after the wrong kind of women. When I stopped the excess there was a lot more clarity and focus and all of the sudden I found myself around more and more quality women.

Its a cliche but it is true, everything in moderation. I believe you can combine these vices and live a great life but it isn't until you go overboard with excess will you be detrimental.

I know we all say gambooool whatever, but I wouldn't really gambling a vice for most successful 2+2ers.

Here's to beer though.

I just assumed gambling and poker were synonymous. But you're right. I don't have a problem with rolling up to the casino and betting my cash away on red.

I was equating gambling with sports betting. Gambooooool!!!

It depends on what you mean by "gambling." If someone is professional gambler (i.e. poker, blackjack, sports betting) and is good at it, then there is no reason not to mix it with women or alcohol. It's certainly possible to have both in your life and be successful. You seemed to imply that this isn't what you meant though. If you're talking about -EV games, well, I think spending a lot of time on them could lead to trouble on its own.

I guess this is a roundabout way of me saying that I find broad statements like that to be fairly meaningless.

There was a great article on lifelong gamblers in the NY Times Magazine last week. (Unfortunately it can only be viewed if you have Times Select).

A quote from that article was very similar "(Writer talking about his father) 'There are only three vices in this world,' he said. 'Booze, broads and gambling. If you're gonna do it right, pick one and stick to it.'"

I rotate my vices.

Whoever said this grossly underestimates the number of alcoholic females in the world. A drunk who craves women should be able to find willing partners for boozing and sex.

what's wrong with the drinking and chasing women combo? I think this works great

We agree; these two vices have a great overlap. I guess the OP might say that the problems associated with managing a booze habit and womanizing habit are too complicated.

I dont gamble I guess, I spend a lot of time playing poker, and I have some business interests in some sporting events, but nothing that I dont have an edge with. In fact, I think the only time I have "gambled" in a casino is the night I turned 21. I drink "etc", and chase tail though, the trick is to not let the tail know about your gambling, and make sure they like to party with you.

By getting married I have eliminated one. Now I just rotate/combine the other two at my leisure.

- Shopping

"Whaddaya gonna do, kill me? Everybody dies."

People are struggling with the definition of 'commit' for some reason. Of course you can do all three in moderation, I would assume >50% of us do. Those of you who know committed boozehounds, whorehouse patrons, or guys betting the Pro Bowl know what I mean.

When I said gamble, I meant -EV games, although most people understood that. I don't think Doyle and Ivey are gambling at the poker table, etc, or professional handicappers as gamblers.
