View Full Version : What is your biggest accomplishment?

Jurollo

There are some TREMENDOUSLY talented people that frequent these forums and I am sure some of you have down some truly unbelievable things in your life. What is something you are extremely proud of accomplishing? I am NOT looking for poker accomplishments so saying you won $X.XX in ABC tournament won't suffice.

As a 23 yr old I don't have a TON of life experience to delve into here, hence, my biggest personal accomplishment would be my completion of my Bachelor's Degree in Urban Studies.

it would probably involve songs I wrote/sang getting on the radio in local/limited airplay. It is something I've striven my whole life for and rarely get.

Although there was one night where a guy from a pirate radio station came to a gig and put the whole kitten kaboodle on there - that really kicked ass - to be on illegal pirate radio, but I'm thinking I'd rather have regular rotation.

actually, I take no greater pride then in being a songwriter, even a marginalized and unsuccessful one /images/graemlins/smile.gif - because at least TWO songs made it in regular playlists - the fact SOMEONE thought it was good enough to play over the air is cool, and in today's conglomerate market, rarer then hell.

The first time thought was a Christian music playlist - 2nd time was the liberal progressive radio station - LOL.

linky to the most recent song is here (http://www.balletschooltroublemakers.com/4_brigid.mp3)

Mine are lame and relate to academia, so they're worthless;
- 2 4.0 semesters
- 4/6 semesters on Dean's List

Very lame, going to get dominated hardcore.

Well not really an accomplishment per se, but biggest/craziest thing to happen to me in my 21yrs is when i was 15 i think, my hotel was taken over by chechen terrorist (Swiss Hotel, Istanbul). Was about 30 of em, got locked in a big room had guns pointed at us. Good times

My biggest accomplishment thus far is finding happiness. I was miserable through my twenties, and when I hit my thirties I told 'the man' to stick it, and went back to school. I am more broke now than I have ever been, but I don't dread waking up every day.

Not the greatest either but being able to purchase a brand new studio apartment in Boston while making 12k a year working for Americorps VISTA. Thank you low income housing programs. I also came second in the state in the Geography Bee when I was 10 years old..

I quit drinking 6 years ago and hopefully it won't be a part of my kids life.

I think all of mine have to do with soccer: Playing on the same club team for 10 years, Won prestigious tournaments, scouted by D1, D2, D3, NAIA, All-State HS, yada yada.

Maybe getting over depression without the use of medication too.

Moved to LA in 1996, got job in talent agency mailroom
Promoted to Talent Agent in 1997
Started new agency in 1999 with two partners
By the end of 1999/beginning of 2000 we were arguably the top agency for our specialty

So, mailroom boy to partner in a successful talent agency in under four years.

If that's my biggest accomplishment 20 years from now I'm going to be pretty upset. If my daughter turns out to be a happy and good person that will probably win.

Also, directing each band concert is a great accoplishment to me. Getting 80+ high school students to do something together and do it well, is certainaly an accomplishment. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

- DJ'ed on the same line up as lisa lashes and other DJ's who I have a great deal of respect for.

- Degree in Business and Management specialising in HR

- Came 2nd in a big pool tournament when I was 16, the 2nd youngest guy there must of been 20, I was very good for my age. Sort of regret not sticking with it.

In terms of things that are tangible, probably some of the stuff I've done at work that has revolutionized our processes, or some info documents I've created that help all of our students.

Personally, it's probably the weight I'm dropping right now, although I hate to count that until it actually stays dropped.

Graduating Magna Cum Laude and earning my EE degree (even though I tried my hardest to completely blow it my final semester).

Moving to Sacramento and starting a career all by my lonesome... though it's generally not been the best time of my life and I've struggled to meet people. It's been a challenge I know a lot of my friends wouldn't have attempted, and I've seen and done some things I wouldn't have otherwise. Ultimately, staying sane and not getting depressed for these past 21 months has been an accomplishment.

Dids how much weight have you lost? Good luck with it anyway.

I think losing weight is a good accomplishment, I lost about 50lbs or something. Alot I put in my first year of university but then in the last 6mths I've put back on about 25, though i'm not terribly fat as before because I carry more muscle than I did then from a few years of solid gym with the last year fairly average diet and excessive party lifestyle.

I actually never though of this as an accomplishment because it came of gradually then one day I was thinking back to how much I weighed and it hit me.

-Getting 1st place in a karate tournament when I was a white belt against people with 1+ years experience
-Learning how to play the guitar
-Hooking up with a hot student from my class when I was TAing (after semester of course)
-Posting in El D's private forum!

Finishing a screenplay after my father passed away and having an editor from "Silence of the Lambs" say it was quite good / wanting to read our final draft. Who knows if it will sell though.

Deciding to say [censored] all the normative young professionals around me and being vociferous about playing poker. Not very good at it, though. So maybe this is not an accomplishment, but sometimes it feels like it.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal, but people seem to think I've done pretty well. I'm also one of those who came from a family not exactly steeped in college tradition, but ended up with my masters in aerospace engineering and in with a pretty sweet company that's quite selective about who they hire at age 22. It's actually not too long ago that I was still younger than some of the interns. After a year in the main office, I've now been in Denver for over 3 years and am in at the beginning of a new regional office. I'm hoping that in 5 or 10 years from now that I can list a thriving office here as an accomplishment that was at least partly mine. What else is cool is that I'm now working on the CEV (replacing the space shuttle), among other things.

I wish I had a firm, good answer to this, but it's probably something relating to grad school. At 21 I moved overseas to attend grad school in Poland, where I knew a total of 0 people and spoke about ten words of the language. I ended up writing a 100+ page thesis about NATO expansion and American security policy in eastern Europe, meeting a lot of people, learning enough Polish to have conversations in bars and conduct my daily business (including with my non-English speaking landlord), and still somehow not getting my MA out of the deal. (Oops, maybe not such a great accomplishment.)

In any event, it was very empowering to move somewhere that I didn't know anyone and didn't speak the language and still be able to be socially and intellectually successful (by some standard). Oh yeah, and I moved over there three days after September 11th.

I had a band in high school. We self-financed and released a CD that we sold a bunch of copies of. We weren't that big of a deal, but had enough of a local following to make me feel really successfull at times.

When I was 24, I stumbled completely a*s backwards into a sales job, having never had any ambition of going into that field. Within one year, I was easily the company's biggest earner - personally bringing 1/3 of the company's entire revenue. Now I'm the manager.

I'm 26 and building a house that I'm really excited about.

i produce hiphop music as a semi serious hobby. i was mentioned and talked about in a NY Times sunday feature about unknown producers who remixed Jay Z's Black Album, the writer compared me to timbaland, which for me is about as high of a compliment as i could get. i ve had tracks on Mick Boogie's mixtapes, which are some of the most popular mixtapes around(www.mickboogie.com).

i've had meetings with major label A&R's but still havent landed anything serious, other than the fact that one of my beats was jacked by one of the most prominent hiphop producers, and ended up being one of Jay Z's best songs.

the popular hiphop DJs where i live play my remixes quite often during their club sets and occasionally on their mainstream radio shows(so im told i dont ever listen to the radio though)

unfortunately, my biggest known accomplishment is from being in a poker tournament.

i don't really have any significant accomplishments, being the same age as OP. i think i usually underachieved (felt like if i didn't waste time playing poker during finals my freshman year, i think i could've graduated near the top of my class).

as far as individual accomplishments, i think i'm most proud of when i got a bunch of friends together to play a modified cover for a large culture show. i wasn't aweomely skilled, but i guess that's what made it even harder to get on stage and perform.

Considering my age, it's mostly academic for me : got 2nd in National Mathematics Olympiad once, 1st in Chemistry once, 1st in Physics twice and selected for the team going to the International Olympiads, topped the entrance exam at a very good Belgian engineering college with exactly zero preparation and didn't even go to the results and entrance ceremony (I was at the International Physics Olympiad when it happened) because I didn't want to go there anyway but in France, which leads me to... got accepted in the top French engineering school whithout working much during the two years preparatory schools. Maybe 800/800/690(verbal) at the GRE without any training whatsoever could count too, although it's really easy (English is my 4th language). I'm now 25 and should be finishing my Ph.D. before turning 26. This all came up as way more braggy than I am accustomed to.

I also have great relations with my parents (they definitely have a part in that) and with everybody in general.

I've always gone through (my short) life with much happiness, which is probably one of the most important things now that I think of it.

Taking a $1M/year hardwood distribution business unit bleeding red ink and turning it into a $9.5M unit that is nicely profitable, while helping direct the overall company (7 business units) grow from $30M to $75M while increasing margins 35% (overall 20pts to overall 27pts), all inside a industry that is stupidly price competitive with very little barrier to entry.

Took 6 years for this growth, but by managing overheads my business unit was profitable 3 months after I took it over.

I love wood.

woodguy,

Wow. If you ever are in the mood to make an "experiences building a traditional real-world business" that would be really great. In fact, there was another guy around here who wrote about his business. I think I'll just start a thread soon called "experiences starting and/or growing businesses" and let everyone contribute as much as they care to.

More importantly, I find it bizarre that after all this time reading your posts, I finally find out that you are indeed a wood guy.

El D,

Thanks for the invite, I will take you up on that.

I've actually gone back to my University (University of Alberta) and been a guest lecturer for an old prof of mine who started the "family business & entrepreneurial center" at the U. It was fun lecturing for MBA students when I only had a BComm /images/graemlins/smile.gif, but like you that was enough (probably too much) education for me.

If you start that thread, can you wait until the week of Feb 12? I'm gone for most of the next week and would like to be a part/start that thread.

Since I only just graduated the answer right now would be graduating with highest honors and ending my college career with my only 4.0.

Hopefully in a few years the answer will have something to do with the new department my company started up for me and my friend based on our senior design project.

Great thread.

My answer is in a little different direction. I am answering the question "What is your greatest accomlishment?" Which is a big difference.

This was one of the two questions during my medical school interviews for which I didn't have a great answer (The other question was "What has been your greatest failure in life?") Every answer I thought of was so mundane it didn't seem worth talking about.

I feel like I am experienced in a lot of different areas. Of course I am proud of my self for making a lot of money in poker and doing well enough in school to get into medical school, however, I can not think of anything I have done in my life that I would consider a "great accomplishment."

I went to school to learn, so that is what I did. I liked poker, so I got better. I don't think winning the intramural basketball tournament is a big deal. I don't see winning the state basketball tournament as a "great accomplishment." I play basketball because its fun, not to accomplish anything.

I have never been to war. I haven't had any great tragedy in my life. I haven't had to overcome great obstacles.
None of the things I have accomplished took some great courage or sacrifice. "I am the middle child of history."

Ultimately, I decided I was the most proud of myself for my overall development as a person. I feel like I do a good job of putting other people before myself. I have empathy for people. If someone does something horrible; I make sure my reaction is an attempt to understand that person's motivations. I am proud that I actively try to improve the world. I am proud of being a thinking smart consumer. I am proud that I don't get upset when people cut me off in traffic. I am extremely proud of the contribution I have made to the lives of my little brothers and my little sister. I feel like I am a great brother.

So, I don't feel like I have any 1 great accomplishment. I think my life has been defined by the decisions I have made, and by my influence on the world around me. That's good enough for me.

none of the other stuff i've done that i'm proud of feels like a particular accomplishment. i'm really happy with the short film i made, but i was only one part of that. and i did a lot of other things i'm happy with (and some i'm not), but calling them "accomplishments" might be a stretch.

i'm still alive-- that feels pretty big to me at this point, even if there are some things about it that will never be the way i want them to be.

All,

Ditto on the Woodguy response from ElD. I didn't realize the background on the name. I worked at a hardwood store in college, good times.

Biggest accomplishment, a few things come to mind.

Nerd entry: I was really big into DECA in high school, a marketing organization, and took 2nd place nationally in my event senior year (Food Marketing Master Employee!)

Professional: Probably fulfilling my dream at the time of making it in TV News. Proving I could succeed in that business, being recognized in person for the first few times.

Personal: Calling my wife to tell her we were going to be homeowners was pretty big.

In some ways, this thread makes me quite depressed because of all the things that I haven't achieved. In terms of boasts, turning down sex with Kate Beckinsale when at college is probably the thing that would turn most heads. It seemed pretty cool at the time as I has a girlfriend but the gf is long gone and as most of my college friends did actually have sex with Kate Beckinsale, I feel I missed out there. It's not a great boast is it "I could have if I wanted"

As for other accomplishments, they feel quite empty because I never really had to work that hard for them.

Without wishing to sound too twee, I'm pretty proud that I have raised two children who are happy and well-adjusted, so far, and, for a variety of reasons, this is actually a fairly susbstantial achievement given myself and my wife's personalities and backgrounds and where it all started. I'm pretty pleased that I'm still married after six years as well and that my wife is just so [censored] cool, despite being a total pain in the arse most of the time. It's a good thing never to have regretted accidentally getting her pregnant.

In terms of how my life has matched up to my teenaged aspirations, well, I never published a novel but I did get into Oxford. I have just seen an enormous amount of the world and lived a life rich in experience in a relatively short space of time. The only continent I haven't travelled extensively is Africa. Oh and America. And it strikes me that this is something my children and grandchildren won't be able to do. I've been shot at in Kashmir, slept on the streets of Calcutta, ridden an MX125 through the Golden Triangle, drunk sailors under the table in Gdansk, seen in snow in the Sahara, taken a speedboat across the Straits of Malacca, shot up in ashrams in Georgetown, had my girlfriend abducted in Marseilles, seen my team win the greatest football match of all time in Istanbul, spent weeks in Bangkok hospitals, run drugs accross five borders and, generally, been about.

Oh, and I independently conceived the theory that Newton in fact the Last Magus. But I can't prove that.

Probably not my "biggest" accomplishment, but my proudest was unhesitatingly throwing myself on top of my family when an F4 tornado came through our yard while "knowing" that our house was about to come down on top of us under the weight of some huge oak trees. I never told anyone this before. About 8 or 9 months ago I'm in my Constitutional Law class and I see Justice Scalia walk in and he goes and sits at the podium. The whole place stops when Justice [censored] Scalia walks in.

Everybody closes their laptops. After a little while, there wasn't a journal meeting going 'cause all the gunners are in our classroom listening to him. Some are arguing with him, giving away their dignity to this guy to say "oh I argued with a Supreme Court Justice".

And you know what I did? I raised my hand and turned on my mic. I know you're thinking "nah you need months of research and a bar card to argue right with a guy like that". Well I had my pocket copy of the Constitution, but I had to know. I played it cool for awhile, nodded along through most of his points, but then I went for the kill.

You're thinking "McCulloch v. Maryland or Marbury v. Madison?". Nothing. I made up the precedent. He quoted Reinquist. I decided, you know, I don't care about reputation. I'm just gonna outdebate this guy. This time. I cite Article III. And he just comes right back at me with the Federalist Papers trying to bully me like I'm some [censored] 1L. I hesitate for two seconds and quote something he never heard of. And he makes a move toward his briefcase and shuffles through his papers. And then he turned off his mic. I took it down. I argued with the best and I won.

I sang at Carnegie Hall and Bass Hall (Fort Worth). I made all state twice in a row, second chair my first year, so that was kinda big-ish. (Second year i slacked off, was 5th chair, whatever.)

Umm.. was scouted by a D1 school and a bunch of D2 schools and JuCos for baseball (I was a pitcher, but hit .460 my junior year), then decided to ruin my shoulder halfway through my senior year, which sent me into a downward spiral leading me to dropout pretty quickly into my freshman semester and pursue this poker thing. Had very serious doubts about whether I actually wanted to pursue a career in theatre. After talking with a few mentors/ friends who were there, they told me that if I was not 100% sure that this is what I wanted to do with my life, I shouldn't go, because I would be miserable. If after 4 years in college I decided that it was something I wanted to do, I'd re-evaluate then, but at the time I had other interests I had to pursue. I was 18, had no real idea what I wanted to do with my life, and had some other great opportunities before me. It had nothing to do with Julliard specifically-- it was the only conservatory I was even considering-- just the conservatory education in general, which, at the time I just couldn't commit to.

Happy with how it turned out.

When the company that I worked for was bought by a competitor, I went through the most stressful year or so of my professional life. I regarded it as my obligation to make sure that our employees were treated as fairly as possible. I was balancing that against my concerns for my position. There were times when tact and diplomacy were called for, both in dealing with the 'other side' and in dealing with my employees, and there were times when I had to argue my position forcefully.

I was able to succeed (by my own definition) and the end result was most of the employees who wanted to stay did, and I ended up in an executive role with the merged entity.

Personally, I was able to convince a beautiful, giving, intelligent, spirited, proud woman to marry me.

More recently though, Soul Daddy, Alobar & Dids agreed that I am responsible for what may the best Cliff's notes to a long post ever. That's got to count for something, right?

Mine falls in the starting business vein...

I was a director level employee in a .com fiasco from 2000-2002. $11 million investment spent for about $75,000 in generated revenue.

A group of us (including company founders) went to the executive team/VC about changing the direction of the company. VC guy determines he is bored with the investment, unilaterally decides to liquidate. Good news was we had $4 mil in the bank that was distributed to the shareholders (of course he got the majority back).

Took the leap of faith to start from scratch and implement the change of direction we proposed. Built enterprise software products from scratch with NO customers and $200,000 in starting cash + founders living off their own assets.

We've officially more than doubled our revenue every year since our initial customer in Jan 2003. In 2006, we posted our first seven digit year of revenue, with 35%+ profit margin. Debt free, growing fast, and implementing YOUR plan = good [censored].

Graduating first in my law school class.

Turning a total dog-with-fleas patent infringement case into a nine-figure settlement for my client.

Hopefully, "being a great dad" will someday trump this but it's too early to say.

mind sharing the story/info of the case? and how much $ exactly did he and you both get.

im also 19 so my range of accomplishments is far less than some of you, but things that stick out are having the discipline and motivation to make it through a post graduate year after i had already graduated high school [with a 1.8] which then actually got me into a good college. winning a state championship in soccer in mass. my junior year of H.S. making my college lax team (and a bunch of other sports accomplishments but these are two big ones) one thing i wish i could say though is that i'd been a better brother to my 10 yo sister.

Wow, some of you are ridiculous. Congrats.

I don't have much right now that isn't poker related, but I sort of get the feeling that ten years from now, I'm either going to be a multimillionaire in exile or some kind of hotshot RE developer. Either way, I guess I'm up for it.

-Being an All State flute player
-Scoring a 790 on the GRE math section after studying for about half an hour
-Scoring a 6/6 on the GMAT written section after zero test preparation
-Helluva Dean's List engineer from Georgia Tech by the age of 21

No single accomplishment is that great, which is why I listed all of them. Makes me feel better.

It's funny how due to the nature of this forum poker accomplishments aren't considered real accomplishments.

Raptor,
If I were to show you your house right now and told you when you were 18 that you would not only be living in that house, but you would own it. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't believe it or you would feel like you accomplished something pretty damn impressive.

As for me it's kind of tough, I'm very happy with the life I'm living, but there aren't many great accomplishments. It seems everything I'm good at people are better than me at. For me I need to "win" regardless of what winning is, I'm always happy with a second place, but I'm also very disappointed. There is lots of stuff I have done, which I'm proud of but nothing which I feel is my "biggest accomplishment." While this is a subjective question I feel like I should be able to answer it objectively correctly instantaneously. Maybe within a year or so I will have a good answer, until then I will continue to ramble nonsensically.

I double a $1K bankroll 15 times in 3.5 years (with no employees).

I decide I have enough of the money game. I fire my two remaining customers.

I now go fishing with the locals in rudimentary boats as a hobby, and raise my 5 year old daughter.

I'm bored and content, but happyness eludes me.

failed in first attempt out of law school to start own firm. 6 months later friend brings me business idea and start new firm may of 2003 with $50k equity loan in spare bedroom of apartment.

just broke monthly revenue record in january to tune of $615,000 and now have 25 employees. so busto to robusto in 3.5 years.

yes the money is finally worth the 6 and 7 day weeks the past three years, but i can honestly say i have never experienced this much stress in my entire life. i used to dream about owning my own business, but being in my early thirties i never thought i would have this much responsibility or worry about this much crap.

yes i know complaining about it is very douche, just saying that accomplishment doesn't always equal happiness. the only thing that keeps me going now is that i hope i can squirrel enough away to retire and get out of the busniess as quickly as possible because this pace is sending me to an early grave and most of the time is the very opposite of fun.

this thread is a great read. awesome to see what everyone has done, and what they value from their past. you guys are awesome.

I guess mine would have to be raising 3 kids, starting with a surprise at age 20 as a broke musician, and making it here with everyone relatively intact.

Playing an opening role on a summer concert tour with Neil Young, Morphine, Primus, and Ben Folds Five, would also have to be up there.

My biggest accomplishment could be this email exchange:

wow I just see this email now from a certain Aaron Winslow to the
umass antiwar group. Let me warn you about this person. Do not trust
him he is not good. He is probably a undercover spy for Republicans
or some other unreasonable group because he is very unreasonable
himself. He failed me from FRESHMEN ENGLISH WRITING despite the fact
that i did all the major assignments and came to most classes. WOW
THANKS A LOT AARON, umass antiwar coalition, your next move is crystal
clear, do not allow him to join and corrupt the group.

goodluck dealing with this menance

RESPONSE FROM A MEMBER OF THE GROUP I KNOW, CHINESE TEACHER

This is so hilarious, I can only assume it is intended as a joke. It was
especially clever of Danny to include so many grammatical and spelling
errors in his complaint about having failed Freshmen English Writing.
But seriously, we should strive to keep this kind of thing off of the
list. It's unnecessary, distracting, and potentially hurtful.

Sigrid

OTHER RANDOM EMAIL

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick note to say that comments on the character of AWC members are not
appropriate for this list. Everyone in the AWC is working for positive social
change, and working hard at it too. Aaron is an excellent guy and an
excellent organizer. Let's try to keep this list positive and on subject!

Peace,

Jordana

TWO RESPONSES FROM A GIRL I HAD A CRUSH ON, A GRAD STUDENT AND SEMI LEADER OF GROUP

Hi Danny,
I'm writing as the list moderator. Your email is completely uncalled
for. Please abstain from sending emails with personal attacks.
Sofia

SECOND EMAIL WRITTEN PERSONALLY TO ME

I agree with Jordana. Please abstain from such emails. Aaron has
probably been working harder than anyone else in the coalition. And
even if he wasn't that still doesn't warrant the email that was sent
out about him.

We came to an understanding a while ago that if something like this
happens, a warning will be sent by the moderator, and if it happens
again, the privilege to send emails to the list will be revoked.

Sofia

MY UNANSWERED RESPONSE TO SOFIA

Completely uncalled for? Didn't you read my email, he failed me for
his class that means I need to take FRESHMEN ENGLISH WRITING for a 3rd
time. Come on seriously, who is the one that should be banned from
the email list?

Until I have my first child, this will probably rank number one for me:

After four years as an HS assistant basketball coach, I took a job at a perennial doormat as the head coach. In 38 years before I got there, they had no winning seasons (just 9 wins in their best season), no playoff wins, and a program win percentage of under .200.

In my second year, we won 9 games, squeaked into the district playoffs as a 16-seed, and hung with the defending state champs (margin in single digits in the fourth quarter) before they pulled away at the end.

In my third year, we went 14-12. We won our first-round playoff game, which was my ultimate goal from day one. We went 11-3 in games decided by five points or less, which I am very proud of.
