BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. restrictions on online gambling may be challenged by the European Union, the bloc's top financial regulator said on Tuesday.

"In my view it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another fora," EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy told the European Parliament.

The United States was protecting its own gambling industry by stopping foreign companies from entering the online betting sector, McCreevy said.

I just read this myself. While it's good news for sure, it doesn't look like action is imminent.

The EU if anything is slower than either the WTO or the senate. Having said that I do think the EU will be a powerful force for online gaming in the next few years.

The UK government today announced the new super casino will be in Manchester and has been robust in defending the new Act that allows this and regulates online gaming. The City of London is ticked off at the US and the EU like nothing better than a beating up on the US, they just want to get the latest trade round sorted before using this one. With this background the EU will back the UK against the US.

This guy was sending a message to the US gov talking to the parliament then briefing US journalists - If the US senate derails Doha expect the gloves to come off on Internet Gambling was the subtext of this briefing. (The US gov knows the EU will use this issue post any Doha agreement anyway but the EU is trying to sound nice, but a bit grumpy this week, post the Davos bean fest).

I thought I'd never say this, but maybe some good will come of cotton subsidies.
