I think I figured it out. It looks like the government gets anywhere from 8% to 20% of a normal casino operation's gross income. That's a pretty goddarned substantial taxation.

They've found a new way to fund the war on terror, apparently: Let a bunch of companies amass a giant amount of wealth, and then attempt to seize it all!

So, now the government is going to piss off the U.K... what's next, the IRA?
100% taxation!

The single largest target, according to The Daily Telegraph, is Anurag Dikshit, the brains behind PartyGaming.

I wonder if this article is saying the founders of PartyGaming are the main/only targets of the DOJ subpoenas, or whether the article just happens to be focused on Party.

In any case, anyone want to bet that this is what doomed Party?

They did add the sports betting BEFORE they pulled out of the US, right? Not a good move, unless you're confident India won't extradite.

I am shocked at how quickly they moved onto poker. I thought they would take baby steps.

I overestimated my faith in our current government (which was already very low).

[/ QUOTE ] They added the Casino before but I believe the sportsbook (at least the non-norse racing part) came after.

But several of their skins had sportsbooks.

Do we know at this point that this is poker related and not casino/racing/whatever? I haven't played at Party for years so I am not up on when they implemented what.

Well, one upside is that the more the DOJ pisses off the UK, the better our chances for something WTO related to happen.

I think.

All you have to do is move to France. They don't care if you are actually in the US and sodomize a girl and are convicted, etc.

These DOJ moves really could end up being interesting cases of international law. I really don't see how they expect to enforce enforce their laws on foreign countries when it comes to the internet. Then again a lot of the Bush admin's actions are pretty retarded.

Other then to create highly paid meaningless jobs for the select few, why the hell do we have organisations like the WTO & UN when members can pick and choose which rulings they are going to implement. Really thought that time when the US spat its dummy out of those stupid passenger manifest's that the EU was going to kick them in the balls and poke them in the eye....but no yet another country/union backing off once again. Just gotta hope that now the DOJ is involving everyone that someone along the line is going to stick two fingers up at them and finally get this [censored] sorted out.

I reallly don't understand this move. Do you think they are going after PartyGaming because they were listed and therefor their money is more traceable then some of the other sites, or because they think that PG is an easy target for a settlement because of their fast withdrawal from the US Market? I don't understand why the aren't going after sites thatare still doing business in the US first.

I am not to sure, but I agree it certainly looks that way. What I know about law doesn't even fit into a fimble, but just what can the US do to a company over here when they have zero presence in the US, cant Partygaming just tell them where to go?.

And what claim do they have to a cent of Party's money? or the money of Part's founders? I don't get it.

bump here -- do we have any new info/other links on this?

from the article linked by OP

[ QUOTE ]

According to local banks, the US Department of Justice intends to recover - through fines and seizure of assets - monies made by the company's senior executives.

The single largest target, according to The Daily Telegraph, is Anurag Dikshit, the brains behind PartyGaming.

[/ QUOTE ]

How are they going after Dikshit? Party was out before UIGEA, supposedly didn't have sports betting until after US pullout. Assuming this isn't based off Party's casino games, are they using the Wire Act to go after poker?

Dikshit has money. Which buys safety in India.

I still have no idea how the US is going after people who've set up companies in other countries though. I'm no lawyer, but it seems kinda ridiculous. Does this mean China can go after anyone who sets up proxies because some of their citizens are using them to surf censorsed sites?
