View Full Version : Best tourney players today- Poll #2

This is meant to be a survey among 2+2ers who have followed the tournament trail the past few years to give our opinion on who the top tournament players are today.

Here are some guidelines for who you should base your vote on:

-Overall results in $2K and higher buy-in tournaments the past 3 or so years. The more significant the tournament as far as buy-in, talent of the field, and importance put on the event; the more the result should be weighed.
-Does he/she have overall rounded results in different types of tournaments such as WSOP and WPT?
-Is the person someone you feel confident will be making significant final tables in the near future, or is it someone who has made 2 huge final tables but that does not reflect how good you actually think they are?

Also, you can give up to 3 suggestions for who should be added next to the poll. The most suggested name will be added as an option to the next poll.

The Results

1. Allen Cunningham - (21/64 votes)

Does Hellmuth not get respect because he is an ass? I can't stand the guy but he is still one of the best.

Hellmuth plays most of the deep stack, big buy in tournaments (at least on the west coast) and really hasn't done a whole lot in any of them in a while. I still think he's a very good NL tournament player but he really shouldn't be getting that many votes this early IMO.

Phil Ivey: 3 bracelets in 2002, deep into the ME in 2003 and 2005, 2005 bracelet, 3rd place in the 2006 HORSE championship (and a 2nd place finish in an Omaha 8OB event), Monte Carlo Millions and Turning Stone wins in 2004, something like 5 WPT final tables... probably has to get my vote.

wtf how many [censored] polls are there going to be. this seems like a great way to use 20 threads to come to no interesting conclusion.

I didn't think I could vote since i dont care much / am not good at MTTs - but one thing I have to mention is god Michael Mizrachi is a beast.

Over the last couple years, in no order:

Phil Ivey
Daniel Negreanu
Allen Cunningham
Scotty Nguyen
John Juanda
Erick Lindgren
Barry Greenstein
Michael Mizrachi
Alan Goehring
JC Tran
Nam Le
David Pham

I'd be interested to see, if anybody has these type of records, the number of tournaments each of these guys plays. Some of them never play the sub 10k buy in events anymore while some of them still do and do quite well at them. Also some people, Chip, Doyle and Johnny Chan come to mind, play relatively few events yet still have great results when they do play. If they played a fuller schedule they would be competing for things like POY.

I'm gonna throw it out there, send it back if you're not happy. In due time we're gonna say "Zee Justin".

I'm not saying that Daniel is the best on the list but the numbers make the case that he is ahead of Allen. Don't see how you can really disagree. Allen has no major wins and has won way less money when you consider that most of his big buy in winnings are from this years main event.

I think a lot of people are missing the point that the poll criteria is supposed to heavily take into account results, but not be 100% results-oriented... there is still plenty of room for subjectivity with the amount of variance in MTTs.
