I'm working on a project for my senior seminar, and have about a 10 page paper due friday. I have everything just about written out (a paper in algebraic number theory) by hand, but need to turn one in a LaTex document.

Is anyone particularly good a LaTex that would like to help me out? I'm willing to negotiate on some terms, but no pooping in a bag or binder here. I also wouldnt need you to do too much, possibly just help me get the format set up correctly so that i can fill in the proofs and definitions.

thanks

edit: i understand that this is not any sort of useful thread, but i thought more people from here would be likely to use LaTex.

I assume you have the LaTeX software itself or know where to get it. The trick to getting started is just finding an appropriate template some place, and a useful editor.

There are some great editors that you have to buy, but TeXnicCenter is a decent editor that you can download for free. http://www.texniccenter.org/

As for templates, just do a google search and you'll come up with plenty.

I also use the MiKTeX/TeXnicCenter combo and have had good success with it.

I am no pro but am reasonably competent at LaTeX... feel free to PM if you have something specific you are having trouble with

I can probably answer a few questions. I haven't used LaTeX in over a year, but I did all my papers in university with it. The first and most important thing is to get the LaTeX cheat sheet (http://www.stdout.org/~winston/latex/). This should cover the basics.

The other thing that you should know is to just let LaTeX handle all the layout, instead of fighting with it to get things how you want it. Sometimes it doesn't do the best job (particularly if you use a lot of figures), but for the most part it produces excellent looking documents. I know a lot of people are shocked at first because it looks pretty much the opposite of how things come out of MS word. Don't be bothered.

Also, if you are doing math you might want to consider AMS-Tex (http://www.ams.org/tex/). It's a little better at doing math, and a little less good at doing text. I think.

I forgot to say that if you want/need to make PDFs from LaTeX use the pdftex package instead of converting a dvi or ps file into pdf. They look about 10 times better and provide support for bookmarks/internal links. The package is highly recommended AAA++++ would use again.

thanks a lot guys. i definitely used the cheat sheet.

also, the TeXnicCenter was amazing, so much better than winshell tex editor. i really liked that even when there were errors it just chugged through and gave me a dvi or pdf anyway.

saved me so much time.

btw, i dont know how much i actually said in my paper, but damn if it doesnt look good.

thanks again
