I thought this quote was interesting enough to deserve it's own thread.

[ QUOTE ]
When science has evolved enough to keep humans alive forever, religions as we know them will be history.

There's no way humans will ever be kept alive forever.

Depends how you define "alive".

yeah I should probably nip this one in the bud.
I know alive is more than "not dead"
I was joking.

I was joking too. It was out of fear for where this thread is headed /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Ok, based on the assumption that humans can live forever (ignoring overpopulation and other such issues), why would this eliminate the need for religion?

Several people (including Kurzweil I think - who we are talking about in another thread) believe that religions are basically for handling and preparing for death. No death = no need for religion.

What about creationism. It's a senseless faith-based, proof-lacking, antiscientific, antirational belief impulsed mostly by the fear of death and the need of the promise of a never-ending existence.

I would assume it's because creationism necessitates a supreme being, who they use as a crutch to deal with death?

Not precisely. Creationism is a desperate cry for everything in the universe to have been made with an ultimate purpose; having us as it's center. If the universe was created with such a purpose, then the idea of an eternal life becomes much more likely.
