Be happy. Make people you care about happy. Decide what "happy" means. Basically set and attain goals or help others attain theirs.

the meaning of life is all the first 4 choices combined.

Eat, [censored], [censored], sleep, reproduce, making money all the while, then you die. If you can figure out the second and third word, you have discovered the meaning of life in its entirety.

I voted Other, meaning "Each life is different and each person has to pick their own Meaning of Life."

Maybe there is no meaning.

But we desperately seem to search for one.

Why do you hold "other" so distant? I begin to wonder if you even know what "other" means.

3 Theories:

On a biological level, we are only programmed to do two things: survive and replicate, so I guess to some degree that's the meaning of life.

I heard this one guy talk about how he thinks the human race is a bacteria, and it's purpose is to feed off the earth until it kills it, killing ourselves in the process. Just thought it was interesting.

My own personal belief, is that its basically to be good. And even though there is so much debate about religion and morality in the world, I think we all have a general sense of right and wrong. So I believe whatever path a person takes to reach these means, wether it be through religion, self-discovery, whatever, it doesn't really matter.

Blarg
12-09-2006, 02:24 AM
This seems to me a critical abandonment of meaningful judgment. Yet we all judge, all the time. It sounds to me like you're playing it safe. For someone who seems to esteem being good, this strikes me as a sort of repudiation of your own belief. How can you endorse standards but then decide that they don't matter and probably can't be judged.

This seems like taking the easiest way out multiple times over.

Doesn't God come with a terrible, swift sword?

Don't let my last sentence think you've freed your hold.

To scatter your enemy and drive him before you. To see his cities reduced to ashes. To see those who love him shrouded and in tears. And to gather to your chest his wives and daughters.

During weekdays, anyway.

true this. You can have all the money in the world, your health and success and still be a loser compared to the most penniless beggar who is happy.

I refute your argument thusly.

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/5005/portlinc9za.jpg

This is the secular saint of the United States, the finest man my nation has yet produced, and nobody but those three anarcho-capitalists argues against his greatness. But he lived his life in misery, with hardly a happy day from manhood on.

By your standards, his whole life is a failure.

By mine, there are few more worthy of emulation.

diebitter

Cardo.

If he lived his life in misery, I'm sure he thought he failed at life, even though others didn't.

I think this is a genuine paradox, and we're both right actually.

db,

especially if he believed in an afterlife, it's always possible that he didn't consider happiness to be the best barometer for "success" in life, though it would be depressing not to be able to have "success" and happiness in the same life

This proves the limits of visions, and why vision should be given so much more credence than it is, and, most importantly, be understood and finally forgiven.

If this was SMP, I'd insist that it is "other," and claim that all of the proposed purposes are not ends but means toward a common end that reflexively defines the meaning of life in terms of itself.

But this is OOT, and the answer is clearly bang tons of hot chicks.

The cosmic truth is - that "42" is probably just as valid an answer to the question as any other.

It also happened to be my own gut response to the question upon reading the subject.

I say other, because you should do what makes you happy, whatever it is, not to do something because someone said you "have to." It sucks to live life miserable.

after reading this thread the only thing ive thought about is: what exactly does the question "what is the meaning of life?" mean?

if it has no solid boundaries then the answer is clearly "it is completely relative to the person in question," and no more than that.

if that is what this question is asking, my answer is: increase the general knowledge of the human race. on a very small scale i have succeeded, but certainly not to the level of my expectation. i sort of have a fear of death because of this.

fwiw- happiness is not my main goal in life, however i consider it as a direct side effect if i succeed in my other plans.
