"With the recent controversy that shook up the tournament industry, Jack McClelland and his staff ratcheted up security by designing two more series of tournament chips. One of these sets was recently introduced at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, though the exclusive set is reserved for the championship."

1. Extra chips at the WSOP ME
2. How they handled the extra/missing bag of chips at the WSOP
3. Something else

If #3 what did I miss?

It sounds like they are trying to prevent players from smuggling chips from a low buy-in event to a higher one.

my guess was the $2 mil discrepancy at the WSOP. but i would also like to know if there was something else that happened more recently, and at their casino, to warrant issuing new chips.

Yeah, I assume the reference in the article was to the chip discrepancy at the WSOP ME, but I didn't know that the "controversy shook up the tournament industry."

I also don't see what one thing (extra chips at WSOP) has to do with the other (new chips at Bellagio) but I think it's definitely good form for a casino to introduce new chips on a semi-regular basis. The 5K chips at the WSOP were different this year too, long before the "controversy" took place.

im guessing the "championship" set of Bellagio chips will have RFID microchips in them, which would eliminate chip smuggling from occurring. or atleast im hoping Bellagio would be smart enough to use this technology.
