Please check behind here. You have to keep this pot small, you're hand is more than likely good and should want to get to a showdown.

Also, you have to assume you have 5 outs to make a very strong hand.

I call up to $6 on the river after checking behind.

I doubt that the hero's hand is 'more then likely good.' But I do agree that he should check behind UNLESS he's had experience with this player to know he's likely to lay down tp or a mid pair to a lot of resistance.
