I am working on starting a weekly tournament of about 40 or 50 people with the possibility of expanding in size and frequency. I have everything I need - chips/images/graemlins/spade.gif, tables/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, dealers/images/graemlins/heart.gif and a hall/images/graemlins/club.gif. The only obstacle is all the technicalities involved in running a legitimate charity event in Ohio.
I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how I can get around the legalities without the threat of being shut down.

Where at in Ohio?

Reece's in Dayton does a lot of charity tournaments and they run commercials all the time. I'm in Columbus and if you're close to there, I might have some players some times to play.

Reece's is http://www.reecesonline.com

In Michigan, our charitable gaming is governed by the same folks that run the lottery. It was limited to bingo, 'millionaire' parties (casino type games), raffles, etc. Recently NLHE cash and tourney games were added. The structures are pretty liberal, but the max payouts for tourneys sucks...pretty dismal really for the price we need to charge to make a healthy profit.

Anyway, check out your state's equivalent: http://www.ohiolottery.com/charitable_gaming/bingo.html

At quick glance I don't see anything poker related yet (as you would at Michigan's Charitable Gaming), but I'm most certain it would be through the same folks. Give them a call.

Michigan law has recently changed for poker tournaments. The Max payout is no longer $500. they can pay out whatever they want. The $5 max bet per round limit for cash games is gone as well.
