View Full Version : The diary of a Microstakes grinder...

I made the mistake of playing a 100max 1/2nl Live game with only 2k put aside for poker. I went on a huge downward spiral, with no tilt involved. I went bust completely and am pretty busto in life as well. I was able to spare 25 dollars from what is left of my savings and this will be my new bankroll.

I'm planning on grinding my way up levels playing a mix of NL and Limit HE, starting at .1/.2c NL and .10/.20 LHE until I get 200BB or 15 buyins for the next level. I thought it might be informative to some if I posted my progress.

Micros have been a headache so far as I find myself not taking them seriously. Going from effective stacks of $800 to $8 is one hell of a jump to make, but I feel that grinding back up will improve by game immensely.

Starting at 25 dollars, I managed to run bad all the way down to $9, and then shortstack my way back to 25 on the 25nl. I managed to finally run good in a short 3-tabling 10nl session today(I've been short buying for 5 dollars)

I decided to switch over to play some LHE for variation, as the micro-NL games seem to get very passive at 4am.
I have mixed sucess, doubling up on one table but getting killing on another and breaking a little over even.

So you changed your 15x buyin rule pretty fast huh /images/graemlins/smile.gif. Anyways You seem to be doing good as you just doubled your br. Keep up the good work, always nice to see someone posting his progress like this.

I started 4 tabling 10nl and realized I was being a moron and moved back down to 5nl...This is one of my major discipline problems. I always try and move up before my roll can handle it. Luckily I doubled up at 10nl because I'm taking a beating at the 5nl.

Well you see a lot of people here who were seriously underrolled for their level still doing quite good (like doubling up with a $400br at $100nl). But there are enough people who did the same and went busto.
It's almost like flipping a coin, and you don't want to gamble while playing poker, so far I have never taken a shot at a level I wasn't rolled for. I'm not that big a fan of gambling /images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the turn I would just call and check the river. I would maybe call a minbet on the river. I can't judge if the raise is +EV or -EV but it definitely introduces a lot of variance, something which your miniscule roll can't handle.

The reliable way you make money at NL5 and NL10 ist to get something that's better than top pair and then move your money in. People will call you.

Ok so today session was pretty swingy mostly due to badly played hands by myself and some coolers. I took a hit last night, posted some hands in another thread where I lost with top set a few times. I started this session with $28, so I took a significant hit.

I'm going to go through and post some hands I butchered (my biggest losses) and some of my bigger hands. Feel free to comment about anything in any hand.

Alternately title this post "I can't play queens"
PF is a mess, someone give me a line?
Flop I think is a fold after such a coordinated board comes down.

All in all, this was a halfway decent 1k hand session with me running at 13/6/3 with a W$@SD of 38%...small sample size, I know but I think it points to me needing to open up a little and call down less.

CrazyIrishman,

Congrats on coming to the realization of moving down. I have just done the same as well and will follow your progress in this thread.

I know exactly what you mean about playing at these stakes as it is hard to take it seriously. I have set myself up both long and short term goals and it has helped to forget what I'm playing for at the table and just get to my goals. Maybe that would help you as well.

Good Luck

crazy:

check raising the river depends a lot on your villians tendencies to bet out weak hands on the river. The more often he does this, the better the check raise works. I value bet the river on your set hand, and check raise the over-aggro's. If he's the type to bet out the naked ace of hearts on the river, obviously this makes the check raise better as well.

I think the fact you bet the flop and turn fairly large would make me want to value bet the river. If you had bet large on the flop, and half pot on the turn, I may go for the check raise (since I look weaker in that case).

I'm stuck here in my apartment taking Darvocet because my balls hurt. Decided to say F*CK microNL for a while and switch over to LHE, which ended up being a great decision. My last NL session erased my gains, so I was back to $26 over a few thousand hands. Last night and today I have been 4-8 tabling the .5/.10 and .10/.20 and I still awestruck by how bad the players are. They pay off your big hands with almost anything and I can't begin to count the number of times I bet all the way to the river with a marginal pair or draw to have them fold the river time and time again.
Advice to all the microstakes grinders, try out limit for a bit and see how you like it. And bet the turn HU, 90% of Microstakes LHE players float the flop automatically with no pair no draw.

If the mod decides this post is now more appropriate for microstakes LHE, by all means move it. But I do plan on moving back to NL once I hit a decent bankroll and I believe one of the main parts of being a good poker player is being able to play multiple games and transition between them depending on which level is softer (ie. .10/.20 is softer than 10nl but 25nl is softer than .5/$1)

Im going to comment on hand #2 only because its something ive been struggling with lately as well, the frustration of getting min raised=losing money. Roughly the last 10 times or so I was minraised I was only ahead 1 of those times and only maybe two of those times I went broke I believe. Im starting to live by the rule of "When you get min-raised at micro stakes you are beat~90% of the time." Obv. this isnt scientific but sooooo many more times than not when I get minraised with an overpair to undercard flop Im beat. Someone with TP will either flat call or more than minraise. The minraise at this level is like aids to me, obv. it depends on the villain but normally I'm done with the hand.

I have noticed that tendency too in the 2 cent games at pokerstars. Minraising as a slowplay of trips/two pair is popular atm. Don't let smarter players pick up on your habit of folding and remember you have outs in many of these situations which might be worth the call sometimes even if you really are beat 9/10 (which won't last)

I don't like your re raising that much at these levels with a questionable pair..

I one hand you get re raised preflop when you have QQ, still you re raise the flop. Now the villain must have something really good , well he had 88 here, but that is not the point /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. But at 10nl I prefer to play a bit more tight, you will still win just as much, if not more.
