Did I fail to protect my hand on the flop here? BB bets small on the Turn so I figure I could call him down here (I am a Limit player trying out NL).

Yes, you HAVE to raise more on the flop to price him out and protect your hand (also for value). The rest is up to the poker gods.

Turn call is standard, he's giving you odds to full up to a boat do some stacking.
