Evans-Novak: Poker Players Have Hand In Defeating Rep. Leach

Not sure if this has been posted already, but apparently our impact on elections is becoming known. From the Evans-Novak Political Report:

"Moderate Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) had a gambling problem -- not to say that he gambled, but he was the driving force behind a bill that all but banned gambling over the Internet. He was the victim of the so-called "Green Velvet Revolution," a campaign by the Internet gambling industry and gamblers to defeat those who pushed the measure. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) survived this campaign. Leach had had serious races in the past -- most recently in 2002 -- but he was apparently not ready for college professor Dave Loebsack (D)."

This is sweet. I am a Republican and I still think libertarian Republicans (not frist, kyl, leach) are better on this than Democrats. However, I am glad this guy went down and even more glad the reason is being stated. The Republicans are planning to go back to the conservative/libertarian ideals of Goldwater, Reagan, and Gingrich. And if they do not, they will lose again.

The best part about all this is they know that libertarians are there to be grabbed. We have mostly been on the Republican side but if they deny us again, the Dems can bring us in the fold. Personally I think Dems are not even close to libertarian minded poker players, they care about the power of the state and taxation. Yet, they "could" bring us in if the Repubs keep denying us.

It looked to me like moderate republicans took a beating. The ones that remain will push the party more toward the Christian right base.

Of the 3 you named, the only libertarian is Goldwater...Ronnie and Gingrich were definitely conservatives.

Interestingl, Leach is more leftist than a fair number of Democrats: Up until today I thought he was some fundie drone.

on some issues I guess that is true, but you have to look at the basic beliefs other than abortion. It was Reagan who famously said "Government can not solve the problem, government IS the problem."

I think we have a much greater impact than you realize. It is not just our votes we influence. On top of my vote, I made sure my Democrat leaning wife, parents and in-laws got out there and voted.
