What is it called when you can't see the stars because of the city lights.

Living here in the Grand Canyon I can see stars that I have never seen before.

Is there an actual term for the effect of city lights on ones not being able to see the stars clearly?

Dunno if there's a term for this but the stars are there during the day also. I suppose contrast would be a term to use.

Really? I thought they went to the other side of the universe for a coffee break while we did our "day business"...how odd...
