Cliff Notes:

On October 26, 2006, this community started a drive to donate money against Arizona Senator Jon Kyl--if you don't know, this is a senator that sponsored the bill against ongline gambling. One week later, we have raised over $10,000 against senator Kyl:

Great job everybody! Our donations have shown that we will fight. But, the drive is not over. You still have a chance to contribute. If you still haven't donated, please go to the page and donate whatever you can. Add your name to the list that shows that you actually did something. I know that, regardless of who wins, I and many others will continue to refer to this donation effort long after the elections. This, among other efforts, will be used to show that poker players do have a voice. So, add your name to the list of people that have donated.

Also, please realize that this race is turning out to be closer than a lot of people thought:

If you have already donated, please email or contact anyone you know that lives in Arizona. Talk to them about Kyl vs. Pederson. Try to get them to vote this coming Tuesday. Pederson has a substantial lead among young voters. The problem is that young voters typically do not vote. If a large chunk of the younger population actually voted, Pederson would win. Talk to your friends, your family, or anyone you know in Arizona who would vote against Kyl. Beg them to go vote.

This should be publicized, too. I don't know where, but it makes a decent two paragraph story.

Just added $25. And, as a 31 year old, I will vote for the first time in my life.

We got mentioned on Arizona Congress Watch, which IMO is the best site tracking the AZ races.

Tremendous find crzylgs! Not only are we mentioned, but the page is starting to look like a poker forum. Let's continue this trend and make more anti-Kyl, pro-poker posts!!!

Just another example of how this group can actively participate in the political process when effectively organized. Quite frankly, this was about as simple as it gets too. Imagine the possibilities....

Berge:

Any chance of you leading the next drive? You and Mr. K seem to know the most about politics. I'd gladly support a drive that either of you ran.

Also, how do we get you to be president of the PPA?

Appreciate the vote of confidence. My involvement has to be limited, otherwise I will find myself needing to resign my current job (conflict of interest issues).

While I really do think there is a ton of potential here politically, I am just not at a point in my career/life where I feel comfortable doing that. Plus, while the PPA has some faults (particularly in the communication with members/players), it does have a good chance of improving and becoming a force.

Seriously Berge, thanks for all the information you have set forth. I really look forward to Tuesday night, politics can be interesting I guess, there have been some races that have interested me even outside the poker the world.

Weeeee! I was contributor #3. So nice to see this thing at almost $11,000 and closing in on 140 donations.

Imagine how much woulda been raised if we'd started this thing a month ago instead of just a week ago??

I REALLY wish the PPA would start organizing things like this. This little 11k donation to make Kyl sweat is proof that there are some poker players out there willing to make a difference and most importantly, put their money where their mouth is. We just need some leadership.

Nice job! I just set up a similar page, Poker Players Against Leach (http://www.actblue.com/page/poker-players-against-leach) (with a link to Poker Players Against Kyl). Leach was a sponsor of the bill in the House.

Although I don't know how much it will help, I also bought google adwords relating to poker in both Arizona and Leach's Iowa district.

Thanks for your efforts. In attacking Jim Leach I would play up the angle Iowa is one of our most pro gambling states:

The House of Representatives version of the bill was sponsored by Jim Leach, a Republican from Iowa. When you think of a place like Iowa and hear one of their U.S. Representatives was sponsoring an anti-gambling bill you might think they were an anti-gambling state. You would be wrong.

Iowa has actually been a leader in the gambling boom across our nation. They can be proud that they were the first state to offer riverboat gambling. They have thirteen non-Indian Casinos and three Indian Casinos. All Iowa casinos offer blackjack, roulette, craps, slots and video poker. Some casinos offer mini-baccarat, poker, pai gow, Caribbean stud poker, let it ride, big 6, bingo, keno, three card poker and Spanish 21. At three of their racetracks they have slot machines and in 2004 added table games. Does this sound like an anti-gambling state to you? Where does Jim Leach get the nerve to appear to be an anti-gambling crusader? How many people have lost house at Iowa Casinos and playing the Iowa lottery?
