View Full Version : QQ vs shortstacks preflop - how much will you call?

Fairly straightforward question:

Assume 6max, 50NL.

You have $50
Villain's stack varies (see below)

You're dealt QQ in small blind
Villain is in MP

Villain opens for $2
Hero makes it $6
Villain pushes.

Assuming villain is completely unknown, how "big" of a shortstack would you call?

In the hand I played, villain started with around $30, or 60 big blinds. I have 0 reads, because this is the second hand I've play with him.

Do you call if villain has:
- 50BB's?(villain starts with $25, in this case $19 more to call a $31 pot - 1.6:1)
- 60BB's? ($30 - it's $24 more to call pot of $36 - 1.5:1)
- 70BB's? ($35 - it's $29 more to call pot of $41 - 1.4:1)

Now, change the question - villain has a short stack, but he's been playing at the table for 15-20minutes with this stack and hasn't made any outrageous moves. How much less will you call?

I pretty much assume here I'm always calling villain if he as 40BB's or less, even if he's been playing it tight.

i am folding 40+ unless i know he likes to push which a lot of players like to do at 50NL

Depends on the villain.

I asked what to do assuming villain is an unknown. I ran into this exact situation on my 2nd hand with the guy, so it was strictly a matter of looking at numbers.

100BB, maybe more.

Against an unknown I'd call every time. Even against a tightish range for a shortie push, we're looking good.

equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
Hand 1: 47.6290 % 46.25% 01.38% { TT+, AKs, AKo }
Hand 2: 52.3710 % 50.99% 01.38% { QQ }

How much will you call up to? You're probably not calling 100BB's... what about 60-70? Where's the cutoff? That's the real question.
