Goodlatte's opposed to all gambling, but regarding horse racing, he says that's covered by the Interstate Horse Racing Act.

Yeah, they've been careful to make it a "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" carveout.

Mr Balko -

Thank you for your article on internet gambling! A lot of the points that you made were very well thought out and factual, and I and other poker players around the world thank you for bringing these things up. One of the many points that I make to people who don't understand internet poker is this:

All of the US players that I know (and there are a lot) would MUCH MUCH rather play on a US site, where some of the profit of the casino goes to improving roads, schools, hiring law enforcement officers, etc. We're not really interested in making people in offshore companies rich. We enjoy the game of poker, and will continue to play as long as there are places who welcome us. But make no mistake, we would rather ALSO be contributing to the well-being of the country at the same time.

Once again, thank you for your refreshing view on this bill. The more that people learn about this, the better it is for our cause.

Mr Balko,

It was a pleasure to read your column today, which I have linked to in the 2 plus 2 forum here http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...;gonew=1#UNREAD (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=7787879&an=0&page=0&gone w=1#UNREAD)

if you want a sampling of the outrage on the part of poker players, peruse this topic and you will see the opinions of poker players everywhere, I have suggested that my fellow 2 plus 2'ers email you directly.

We are slowly losing our freedom in this country, the question is: how far are we going to let it go, before we do something?

Best regards,

Mr. Balko,

Thank you very much for your well thought out report on the recent i-Gaming legislation that was passed through Congress on the back of the Safe Port Act.

You are correct in your point that poker is a game of skill, but more importantly you are correct in your point that the government should not meddle in the private affairs of its citizens. Poker players are outraged at this legislation not only because it hampers our ability to play our favorite game, but also because we simply don't need the U.S. Congress to protect us from ourselves.

Messrs. Frist, Goodlatte, and Leach have all proclaimed that Internet gambling is highly addictive and that it allows terrorist groups to easily launder money. Yet, Congress has made no effort to provide help and support for addicts, and there has not been a single proven case of Internet casino funds ending up in the hands of terrorist groups.

Your point that poker players are a "largely apolitical group" that may well "get politically motivated" by this legislation is spot-on. Many Internet poker strategy forums are now awash with posts calling for poker players to vote Democrat, vote out all incumbents, or vote for the Libertarian party.

Once again, thank you for your excellent analysis.

I only did once, but then again I'm an under-achiever.
