If humans never evolved to read and write in any language what would religion be like ?

There would be no holy books to follow like the Koran or Bible etc.

Would religion become like the game where 20 people line up and whisper something into your ear and the story always changes from the beginning.

What would religion evolve to when that line is 20 billion people long over centuries. And no written word to keep the story straight.

Probably to about what we have today. This is essentially what happened anyway, right?
