The new GRACE satellites have been keeping a close watch on Greenlands Ice sheet. In the past snowfall has outpaced the melting of the ice sheet. However, now things have changed. Researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center explain:

"What we see is a massive amount of mass shedding that far outweighs an interior growth. .

We are now losing 20 percent more coming out each year than goes in as snowfall.

None of this has been predicted by numerical models, and therefore all projections of the contribution of Greenland to sea level [rise] are way below reality."

But global warming is a myth right? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Sounds like the future is going to be fun for a few million in Bangaldesh. Keep in mind 80 feet over time (linky) (http://www.nybooks.com/articles/19131) is a real possibility and this image is only 1.5 meters.

Get a crew over and get them at least red badges in swim proficiency.

Edit: Very little actual humor in that statement. There's not a lot we can do with an overpopulated marshland country.

Over what period of time?

Edit: Nevermind, found it. One century.

yes, but those estimates will have to be adjusted. This century will certainly be rather mild as far as sea level rise goes. But the next century will likely be very very different. Heh, glad I'll be dead by then.

Well, closer to home (for Americans, anyway), it looks like rebuilding New Orleans is a complete waste of time and money, and Florida is in rough shape. IIRC, the highest point in Florida is 300 some feet above sea level, and a lot of the state is below 80 feet.

The Netherlands may be in trouble as well, depending on just how high they can build those dikes.

But for sheer loss of life, Bangladesh will be the worst place, especially given that most of the people there are very poor and really have nowhere to go.

In any event, beachfront property does not look like a good long term investment.

I posted this in the other thread but I'll post it here too. Climate change (http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa576.pdf) Paper by the former president of the American Association of State Climatologists. But Wacki claims he is a big oil shill as the cato institute is funded by them. What do people generally think about the cato institute?

and i will repost this:

the Exxon & Phillip Morris funded CATO institute!

Patrick Michaels is a demonstrable liar (see link) and an industry shill. The "State Climatologist" position is merely an honorary position that has no teeth. It's kind of like giving Bono from U2 a honorary Ph.D. in (insert the blank).
http://www.logicalscience.com/skeptics/patMichaels.html

And to give you an idea how credible the cato institute is:

"Indeed, the last necessary additions to this body of technology--nuclear fission and space travel--occurred decades ago. Even if no new knowledge were ever gained after those advances, we would be able to go on increasing our population forever"

http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/pr-so-js.html

So we don't need any new technology to transport mass quantities of people to a differnt planet? Seriously give me a break.

P.S. Thankyou Feeney for that link!

Adding for accuracy:

As a precautionary note GRACE has only been around for 4 years. So we have to be careful extrapolating long term trends over such a small sample set. It seems my title may be a bit premature. However, since "all indicators have started to point in the same direction" it is certainly something to think about. The situation can get better or even worse.
