View Full Version : Moving out of the US

Has anyone considered moving away from the US due to this new legislation. I thought about Canada, not too far from it physically. I think if I moved it would be due to a culmination of BS that is going on with this gambling legislation breaking the camel back.

People do it all the time, of course when they return for a visit they are forced to pay all the back taxes they owe plus penalties, interest and oh yes, let's not forget the potential felony conviction for fleeing the USA in order to avoid paying taxes.

I dont see how this country could pull tax evasion if you are moving because you disagree with the state of the union and the direction the country is headed. Not to mention, if I leave, I'm not coming back.

I'm curious if you have to pay taxes on an action that they consider illegal that is performed outside the US? I'm assuming so, but don't know in fact.

If you moved outside the US you could pay taxes on your gambling like you would do if you could play in the states and still visit without an issue, I would think. So moving outside the US to play doesn't mean never coming back.

There are more reasons than just to play poker that could feasibly make one want to move out of the United States in this day and age. Frankly, the only reason I'm still in America is because I choose to stay and fight.

So from what some of you are saying about taxes, anyone that lives outside of the US and buys goods or services from a shop in their own country, that are also sold in the US(shirts, computers, etc), should have to pay taxes just to visit the US? That sounds like horse crap to me. If I lived in Mexico or Canada and bought a led zepplin shirt, there is no way I would pay the sales tax when I walked across the border to visit my mom nor would I call the IRS and write them a check for my back taxes when I don't live in US.

Contrary to popular belief, this country sucks. Our healthcare system is fubar, education is crap, politics is rediculous, other items including welfare, food stamps, and social security need some serious work, corruption and other various "illegalities" are running rampant. How can you say this country is the best, especially if you haven't visited any other countries?

There was a time when I would have agreed with you, then I decided to open my eyes and see what is going on in Washington and various other cities. This country has potential, however, the system is so far gone that it will take a massive revolution to fix it. Not gonna happen.

You'll have to renounce your citizenship. The US is very proactive in seeking taxes from citzen/ex-pats.

Unless you renounce your citizenship, you have pay taxes on whatever income you make that you don't pay taxes on in your new country (basically, there's some weird exception on the first 80k).

You also have to pay taxes on any income obtained illegally. If you sell drugs or hire yourself out as a hitman, you have to pay taxes on the income.

If you think the U.S. is that bad, I imagine you'd just die instantly in most countries on the planet. There are, however, several countries I'd consider competitive these days as far as the best place to live.

So your winnings are already taxed and you shouldn't need to pay taxes to USA, if you move to Europe and play while staying here. I suppose.

This may be a great country for you, but its not for everyone. For me, its got to be one of the worst. This poker legislation is just another reminder of how the US is one of the most oppressive countries in the world.
Actually now that I think about it, the only redeeming quality about the US is football.

Canada is not a realistic model, nor are the welfare Euro countries. Canada benefits from being connected to big brother america big time. Hell, canada doesn't really even need to worry about military and they are still about to go busto financially. Socialism does not work over the long run and that's Canada's biggest long-term problem. I do lots of business w/ Canada and am well aware of the problems that they have.

For christs sake, guys, the notion of having to pay taxes at all on gambling money is absurd, IMHO. Most people started their bankroll with $ they made from jobs....money that was already taxed. Your paying taxes again on that money with EVERYTHING YOU BUY . Then on the converse side you can only deduct gambling losses to the point that they cancel out winnings. Once the losses consume your roll, and venture into your life money, you can't write it off anymore. And, your gambling losses can't cross over from year to year. So if you are down 30K in '06 and up 15k in '07, you pay no taxes (but get no write offs) in 06 but pay full tax on the 15k in 07.

Throw into the mix that you have absolutely no say whatsoever in what programs your taxes pay for (don't give me that voting crap either), and you got yourself a one way system that leads right to DC, and from there is dispersed to big business/interest groups.

I've lived out of the country before and would have NO PROBLEM doing it again. This issue is about more than just a card game....it's about whats right and whats fair.

I lived in Europe for three years. While I hated the snow (lived in Germany) there wasn't much that was missed except football and now there's the internet so you can get NFL online. While I wouldn't leave this country because of poker I think it's close-minded to think this is the only country in the world worth living in. All governments suck to some degree or other, you will have to deal with issues similiar to this anywhere you live.

Ok well let's assume that we want to leave the country so that we can play online poker. How does one even do that? Let's use me as an example. I'm 30 with a good education and a fat job and have >100K in savings. Where do I go so that I can play and how do I do it exactly? I can't imagine that the Dutch gov't is just gonna let me hang out in Amsterdam forever.

I moved out of the US last year because I hate the country now.

I have family still in the US. I pay my taxes on my income (poker is primary income), so I don't worry about not being able to come back to visit. I get a tax break for living outside the country though.

The US has great propaganda. Is there another country in the world where 99% of the population thinks that their country is the best, and only 10% have ever stepped foot outside?

For christs sake, guys, the notion of having to pay taxes at all on gambling money is absurd, IMHO. Most people started their bankroll with $ they made from jobs....money that was already taxed. Your paying taxes again on that money with EVERYTHING YOU BUY .

[/ QUOTE ]

You pay capital gains taxes on your investment portfolio. That portfolio is paid with after tax dollars. Your estate pays death taxes on your money, that was already taxed. There are numerous other examples. Fair or not, poker is being treat like everything else.

yes, I live in Buenos Aires for now.

I don't have residency. I'm on a tourist visa. 3 months at a time, but it costs less to pay the fine for staying over than it does to get an extension. But I haven't needed to do either since the 3 months resets every time you leave the country, and I end up taking a trip outside the country at least once every 3 months anyway.

I am thinking about starting the process for getting permanent residency, since I really like Argentina. And as I understand it, for a foreigner with outside income, it isn't very difficult. I don't have personal experience with that yet though.

It's a sad day period when anyone would even consider leaving the US because of infringements on an individual rights. Who'd of even thought 10 years ago that it could come to this? Kicking out Ayatollah Frist sounds like a better option.

[/ QUOTE ]

The vast majority of the existing government infringements on our individual rights are well over 10 years old.

You may be right. It depends on what specific things you believe have infringed. However IMO there hasn't been an administration in my lifetime that has even come close.

Indy,
This may be a great country for you, but its not for everyone. For me, its got to be one of the worst. This poker legislation is just another reminder of how the US is one of the most oppressive countries in the world.

Yup, it's a wonderful country! Where everything that makes funU is illegal! And Goverment can fk the population at their liking. Just take a week or two of vacation outside your beloved country and learn how beautyfull the rest of the world is.

I have been playing online for 3 years and have prolly cashed out 7-8 thousand.

I dont have a job and dont pay taxes on any income.

Is it possible I will be flagged and or arrested? because going to jail is not an option for me. im skinny fresh meat. i would prolly get pwned in the showers 10 times per day.

Someone who knows about taxes plz help

[/ QUOTE ]Go to IRS website, you might not even have to file federal making 7G a year in total gross income. But you can find that info on their site. Also state tax laws might also vary.

Remember that we voted for the idiots in Washington who are screwing us. It's not really the politicians as much as the soccer moms who want the evil gamblers away from their precious children and the apathetic moderates/don't care people who don't go to the polls to cancel the mom's vote for the facists.

Living in Latin America poses some other risks. You can live well with less money than here, but you face more risk. The kidnapping rate there is astronomical and if you are kidnapped, the FBI isn't going to be spending any time looking for you. You will be lucky to get out alive even if you pay. Also, many of the countries are unstable or could become unstable in the near future. Hugo Chavez destroyed the economy of Venezuela despite having tons of oil revenue. I worked down there and the local employees at my company say the value of their savings cut in half as their curency plummeted. They couldn't even exchange their money for dollars ahead of time because the government banned it. I saw a near revolution in Guatemala and watched Daniel Noriega (the commie that killed thousands of Nicaraguans) nearly get reelected. Even in Argentina, one of the better off countries down there, the economy collapsed a few years ago and crime skyrocketed. It might be a decent short-term alternative, but you need to be able to get out on short notice.
